It was good to see Tony Brunskill have a win in last Monday's nine-hole vets stroke comp with a score of 33 nett, a couple of shots better than Charlie Down and Peter Briggs. They were followed by Warren Lynch who, thanks to his plus-1 handicap, had to add a shot to his par round of 35 for a nett score of 36. Don Kirwan, Peter Kirkman and Eddie Wall also scored 36 nett to round off the vouchers. In Thursday's comp, Ron Culgan fired up for good round of 32 nett and a one-shot win from Bert Adams, Bill O'Rourke and Eddie Wall, followed by Peter Briggs, Peter Kirkman, Russell Parr, Tony Brunskill, Garry Forde and Bob Hodge, each on 36 nett.

ORIENTEERING
There was an exciting three-way tie in the WaggaRoos Summer Series of Orienteering event at CSU last Sunday.
Starting from the Peter Hastie Oval, participants had to find the answers to questions about the campus within a set time limit. Questions included identifying the occupant of specific buildings, room numbers, details on signs, and the state survey number on the trig on top of the hill just west of campus.
The challenge for participants was deciding whether to tackle the bushland hill section first while the legs were fresh and then collect what they could around the buildings or collect as much as they could around the buildings and then see if they had enough left to tackle the hill.
Alex Davey took on the hill early and had enough left to continue on and find all answers within his 45-minute time limit. He finished with a comfortable five minutes to spare and maximum score of 210 points.
Briohny Seaman also took to the hill early and also managed to complete the course and find all the answers, but did it quicker scoring her 210 points in a very fast 31 minutes.
Stuart Young worked his way around the southern part of the buildings first, then climbed the hill before completing the northern section between the buildings. However he realised he had missed one control at the far western side of the bushland section and two on the far eastern side of the buildings. At this point he put on the after-burners and ran first west and then east to collect all answers and still finish with seven minutes to spare. He ran 1500m further than Briohny and Alex but his effort managed to force a three-way tie for first place.
John Oliver was just off the pace missing two questions and scoring 200 points. Deb Davey and Trent Seaman were also in the hunt, scoring a very good 195 points.
Participants on the 30-minute course just worked their way around the campus buildings. Debbie and Jo McDougall collected 95 points, while Logan and Ryder Seaman each finished with 50 points.
Hard luck story of the day was the participant who did not turn off the auto-pause feature on his smartwatch. Of course, it stopped whenever he did to consult the map or work out the answer to the question. Thinking he was finishing with plenty of time to spare he was a bit disappointed to find he had actually incurred a 45-point time penalty for being nine minutes overtime.
The next and final event in the Summer Series of Orienteering will start at 9am on Sunday, March 1 at the playground on the corner of Mima Street and the southern end of Bindari Avenue, Glenfield Park.
RESULTS: 45-Minute Course: Briohny Seaman 210 points; Stuart Young 210; Alex Davey 210; John Oliver 200; Trent Seaman 195; Deb Davey 195; Roylene Stanley 155; Izzy Hutchinson & Chontelle Dailey 150; Ian & Rob McDougall 90; Don MacIntyre 55. 30-Minute Course: Debbie and Jo McDougall 95; Logan Seaman 50; Ryder Seaman 50.

ULYSSES
Six hardy souls headed for the hills last Wednesday in some great late summer weather. Oscar, Sue, Des, Les, Mark and Gino went the long way to Rosewood and at that point Oscar decided to head home. The rest continued on to Tumbarumba where they all topped the tanks and then shot off to Walwa through Tooma and Tintaldra. By the time they got to Walwa, the worms were biting so they hitched the horses and descended on the Saloon for lunch. As usual, the lunch was good and munching and talking took place for a good hour or so. With all things taken care of the track home was through Jingelic and Holbrook. The week before Sue had put on a stage show navigating a tricky corner, but she managed to hang on with a thumping heart. This time round she was much more demure.
The weekly Saturday meet and greet was another popular outing for 14-odd people who managed to discuss many topics with great wisdom garnered over the past 60 years. Some of the discussions are quite hilarious - a bit like the comedy half-hour. However, this week, the Commercial Club had booked out the deck for some function and we all had to vacate by 10.35am. I was running late and everyone had gone except Bob Middleton, so we sat and had a quiet chat on our lonesome.
Sunday came around at a great rate of knots and we had a line up at McDonald's for the second branch ride of the month. What a lineup: Pat Combs, Steve Oldfield and Noel Siebels. In spite of the low numbers we had great day out, heading out to Lockhart and Urana, stopping at Morundah for a thirst quencher at the pub, but the pub was closed and being only 11am we figured that they had gone to church. So we pushed on and arrived at Coleambally in time for lunch, settling into the Community Club for a really good Chinese meal at a bargain basement price only $10, what great value. After lunch, we saddled up and took the Kidman Way up to Wadi where we topped the tanks, and from there rode into Darlington Point following the road through Whitton to Leeton. At Leeton we took the back road through to Yenda and motored on to Narrandera, had a brief stop and came straight home along the Sturt Highway. From about 1.30pm the day was starting to heat up and by the time we reached home base it was starting to become a little uncomfortable. Nevertheless, a great day out. Our first branch meeting was held last night and will give you a heads up next week and our next Sunday ride will be held on March 1.
