The ladies continued with their nine-hole Summer Cup last Tuesday, and it was Lorraine McGowan's turn to collect the main voucher after she scored 21 stableford points for a solid win, while Jan Leonard claimed second spot with 19 on a c/b from Di Jenkins, also on a c/b. In Friday's comp, Di Jenkins completed a good couple of days by scoring 20 for a one-point win from Jan Leonard, followed by Jenny Cummins, 18, on a c/b. In vets news, Mick Tilden was another golfer who played well under his handicap, scoring 27 nett in last Monday's nine-hole stroke event. Barry Longmore carded 29 nett for second spot, followed by Peter McDonald, 30, then Tony Pollard, Phil Powell, Tony Thompson, Bill O'Rourke and Lex Boardman, 31, and Bob Moore and Roger Taylor, 32 nett. In Thursday's event, Tony Thompson took the honours with 28 nett, from Terry Baker, 29, then Ken Batt and Barry Longmore, 30, Len Jenkins, Les Hodges, 31, and Don Kirwan, Garry Forde and Max Robinson, 32 nett c/b. In Wednesday's members' stableford event, John Parker scored 43 points for a win in A Grade, from Ray Harrison 41. In B Grade, Alan French fired up for a great score of 45, although an unlucky Doug Emery was hot on his heels with 44. NTPs to John Tritton on the 9th, and Warren Lynch on the 13th and 18th holes. Ball comp to 41 points on a c/b. Tim Barlow's 18-hole Sunday stableford completed the week, with Dave Weeden the stand-out performer on 46 points, from Roy Sanders, 43, Steve Rodham and Rick Leonard, 40, and Linda Coombes and Peter Austin, each scoring 39.

Sunday's Nostalgia Day Tournament against South Wagga bowlers for the Mick Nelson Perpetual Trophy saw a great turnout from both clubs. Keen to make it four wins in a row, The Rules led early in game one but lost 88 shots to 80. The South Wagga players were on a mission in game 2 and were never headed, winning 96 shots to 86 giving them the aggregate of 184 shots to 166 and their first win in the trophy. Best performed team for the winners were Col Firman, Col Plater, Ralph Todd with two wins plus 14 shots and best performed for The Rules were Barry Belt, Kevin Rafter, Peter Wild two wins plus 11 shots.

WaggaRoos has been named NSW Orienteering Club of the Year. The award is made to a NSW orienteering club showing a high level of achievement in promotion, membership, event organisation and competition. In making the award Orienteering NSW president Greg Barbour said: "For a small regional club, putting on a state league weekend is quite an effort. Hosting the NSW champs is even bigger, and the Australian champs is bigger still. But helping to put on an event for more than 1000 orienteers at the Oceania Carnival just about takes the cake for event organising in this country. Two lively and lovely sprints plus map making, map checking and all the behind-the-scenes work of a major international carnival. Add to that hosting an annual Riverina Schools Regional Championships and conducting a very competitive annual interclub challenge with the Albury-Wodonga club, makes the WaggaRoos is a worthy winner of this award." WaggaRoos president John Oliver was delighted with the award, saying it recognised the many hours of planning put in be a small but dedicated membership that ensured orienteering events in the region are enjoyable, run smoothly and are of a high standard.

On the competitive front, there was an exciting tie in the WaggaRoos summer series event at Estella last Sunday. Starting from the park in Schooner Place, participants had a set time limit to find the answers to questions about the suburb. Points were scored for correct answers and deducted for exceeding the time limit. Participants were able to choose between a 30-minute and 45-minute time limit. A total of 265 points was on offer. The northern part of the course contained the majority of the questions most of which were of lower points value whereas the southern part of the course had fewer questions but all were of higher points value. Deciding which way to go became a critical decision.

On the 30-minute course, Deb Davey and the Metcalfe family group both focused on the northern component of the course. Deb finished with 2.5 minutes to spare and a good score of 120 points. The Metcalfe family, Imogen, Zoe and Fiona, found one more answer than Deb but in doing so exceeded the time limit and suffered a time penalty which reduced their score also to 120 points. Alex Davey edged out John Oliver on the 45-minute course. Alex focused on the periphery of northern area to start with and then moved into the southern area picking up some of the higher value answers. It worked slightly better for Alex who finished with an excellent 195 points compared with John's 190. The next summer series event will start at 9am next Sunday, December 8 at the park on the corner of Sherwood Avenue and Kilpatrick Street, Kooringal. Results: 30-minute course: Deb Davey 120; Metcalfe family 120. 45-minute course: Alex Davey 195; John Oliver 190; Shane McMullen 180; Roy family 125; Pauline Moore 115; Bob Moore 110.

Next week will be the final of the Wednesday junior doubles tennis competition at the Bolton Park Tennis Complex. In the event of wet weather, the presentation will still take place at the start time of 4pm. Leading the competition is Victoria Grantham on 53 points, then Michael Paolucci-Ellis on 49.5 points with Wyatt Piltz on 34.5 points. Beau Bradley on 28 points and Max Laurent and Seth Piltz tied on 24.5 points make up the top five. This week's winner of the McDonald's Sports Award was Seth Piltz. Wednesday riders Les, Graham, Don, Sue, Mark and our new chum, Darren, all took off for Rutherglen, where they had an enjoyable lunch at the bakery. Oscar didn't go - his Spyder had developed battery troubles and he couldn't get the inner workings to turn over, let alone fire. After lunch, the happy six motored home through Howlong, Walbundrie and Henty after enjoying a great day in the sunshine. Just remember the Wednesday rides depart from the Busy Bean Café (35 Gurwood Street) at 9am, and usually consist of a small group of riders eager to escape. The Christmas party at Tallangatta turned out to be a rip snorter, thanks to the efforts of Lorraine. There was a bit of a kerfuffle with accommodation owing to the fact that the only motel in town cancelled all the bookings we had made to accommodate some firefighters having a meeting in town. However, we all got sorted and in most cases ended up with better sleeping than we may have got. All in all, we had 21 at the dinner and the meal was not too shabby - the people at the Victoria Hotel certainly know how to look after their customers. Most of us fronted up again on Sunday morning for breakfast, which certainly got us in a good frame of mind for the journey home, and the various revellers took a different route back to base camp, some going through Jingellic and Holbrook and others hooking up to Tumbarumba. Leslie Grauer bought herself a Can Am Spyder but had to abandon it on the way down at Holbrook, as one of the front tyres was scrubbing out.

The next event on the calendar is the toy run this Saturday. The start will be at the Jubilee Oval car park at 9am. Turn up about 7.30am and the Kooringal Scouts will have some bacon and egg rolls for sale for breakfast, as well as tea and coffee or cold drinks.

There is no entry fee for the toy run, but each rider is asked to bring along a suitable gift for a child aged 3-15. Your bike must be registered and you must be licenced; also make sure you have plenty of fuel on board as the toy run covers a distance of 90km.

At about 10.15am, there will be a half-hour stop at Apex Park in Lake Albert for refreshments, once again put on by the Scouts, and the deal at this point is a gold coin donation. On the way round, we will have stopped briefly at Forest Hill for a comfort stop. We will finally arrive at the Civic Centre about 12.15pm for the handing over of the toys to St Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army. We will also have a brief auction of wooden toys from the Junee jail, the drawing of the raffle and the lucky riders prizes. After the toy run, the only other event will be the last branch meeting for the year on December 17. The evening will get under way at 6.30pm with a sausage sizzle and salad courtesy.

On January 19, the Grauers will host a breakfast at their residence in Ladysmith and a short ride up into the hills will follow.
