ULYSSES CLUB
The weather is really great at the moment but can get a little warm in the early afternoon, so last week the Wednesday riders - Pat, Les, Sue, Mark, Don on the Indian, Thommo riding his Goldwing resurrected from the reservation and Darren - all headed for the hills and passed through Tarcutta and Humula to arrive at Rosewood.
Darren, a new chum from Kapooka, peeled off at Tarcutta and went back home to attend to some other matters. The rest of us settled down to some nice cool drinks, ice creams and snacks in the outdoor area of Barneys Gone Crazy's and whiled away the time in a nice cool breeze. By the time we had festered and rested, the degrees were climbing up the scale so we headed straight home through Kyeamba and Gregadoo in time for a late lunch. No a long ride (190km), but most enjoyable all the same.
On Saturday, we had a really good roll up for meet and greet. Management at the Busy Bean have pulled out all the shade bushes out front so the ladies all elected to sit inside and gasbag, while the men sat outside in the sun to discuss their individual skills as the traffic rolled by.
There was no club ride set down for last Sunday, but the day was absolutely pristine and several groups availed themselves of the conditions and hit the highways and byways.
The only major events coming up are the Christmas party at Tallangatta this coming weekend and, of course, the toy run on December 7. The Christmas convoy will leave the Busy Bean Cafe after meet and greet this Saturday morning. Each person is requested to bring a gift to the value of about $10. I will give you some further details of the toy run next week.
There will be a branch meeting at the club rooms on Tuesday, December 17. This meeting will get under way at 6.30pm with a barbecue and then a short meeting before Santa hits our shores. Things are beginning to slow down a bit as Christmas Day looms, so see you on the road soon.
SOFTBALL
Turvey Park Red caused a minor upset when they defeated Saints 6-3 in the feature match of the Wagga Softball competition on Saturday.
Both sides were short of regular players and several players on both teams were playing their second match for the day when they lined up in the top grade.
Sarah Carter was first to score for Turvey when, after a safe hit, was batted in by Jamila Piercy.
Despite hits to Paula Potts and Tessa McGlynn in Saints first innings they were shut out in response.
Turvey was shutout in the top of the second and Saints drew level when Grace Ryan was batted in by Emily Weir.
The top of the third proved most fruitful for the Reds when Carter, Belinda Dennis and Piercy all crossed the plate to give them a three-run lead.
This margin was lessened by one when Seona Dwyer took advantage of a muffed fly to add a single to Saints score.
Following a shut out of both teams in the fourth, Turvey scored again courtesy of a left-field three-bagger which sent Anneka Piercy the whole way. Again Saints were dismissed without score in the bottom of the innings.
Turvey was also shutout in their sixth dig, whilst Seona Dwyer, after a strong left-field hit, was advanced to home by Grace Ryan's hit to the outfield.
Turvey scored yet another run in the top of the seventh leaving Saints the task of scoring three to draw or four to win.
Despite getting two on base, a smart double-play by Turvey third-bagger Belinda Dennis ended the Saints innings.
In the other game, two fruitful innings were enough for the South Wagga Warriors to outbat the young Turvey Park Blue team 12-1.
The Blues were without experienced players, Sharon Hall and Jane Wadley and talented youngsters, Jess Wendt and Leila Wadley.
After two innings each the score was 1-all with Jess Swaysland crossing the plate for the Greens in the top of the first and Charlie Hall equalising for Turvey Park in the responding dig.
The floodgates opened in the top of the third after both teams were shut out in the second.
Montana Kearnes made first base on an error and was batted in by sister, Layhnee Kearnes, who hit the first of her two home runs for the day. Hits to Mackaylee Little, Kimberley Dennis, Kristy Tenison and Swaysland contributed to the Warriors' seven runs in the innings.
Hits to Swaysland, Tenison and Layhnee Kearnes' second home run in the fifth made the score at 12-1 and the mercy rule was applied.
