WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
The shortened course continues to be there for the taking for short game specialists such as Eddie Wall, who scored 28 nett to beat Tony Thompson on a c/b in last Monday's Vets nine-hole stroke event. John Burkinshaw took third spot with 30 nett, a shot clear of Bert Adams, Peter 'Possum' Briggs, Charlie Down and Bill O'Rourke, with the last voucher going to Ken Batt, with 32 on a c/b.

Therese Quinn took care of Division 2 with a great score of 49 pts, while Carole Gardner also played well for 45 pts and second place. A special mention also for Fay Baker, who just like Marg Gregurke a couple of weeks ago, aced the par 3 second hole! NTP: Di Jenkins. Ball comp to 39 pts c/b.
As 15 of our girls travelled to Howlong to compete in the Riverina Ladies Open last week, it was a reduced field for Friday's Stableford event. Well done to Pam Seymour who scored 44 pts to take care of Division 1, and Cae Cobby, who really set the course alight with 52 pts to win Division 2. NTP: Sue Oakman. Ball comp to 42 pts on a c/b. Well done also to Kylie Baker and Linda Coombes, who collected trophies in the Howlong Tournament.

ORIENTEERING
WaggaRoos' Deb Davey has been selected in the Australian team to contest the Australia-New Zealand Challenge during the Oceania Orienteering Carnival to be conducted in and around Wagga in a fortnights time. The event has attracted just on 1000 entrants including Australia's best orienteers as well as orienteers from New Zealand, Hong Kong, New Caledonia and Europe.
The 9 day Carnival will include the Oceania Championships, the Australian-New Zealand Challenge, the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships and a three-day public event.
The Carnival will commence at CSU on Saturday 28 September with the Oceania Sprint Distance Championships and Unisport National Orienteering Championships. Then it will move to Bethungra for the Australian Long Distance Championships and Relay Championships in a new area comprising rugged rocky outcrops.
On Tuesday, October 1 it will return to Wagga for the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships. A total 160 school children from across Australia and New Zealand in representative state and national teams will compete in sprint distance, long distance and relay races. The sprint distance will be held at Kildare Catholic College on Tuesday 1 October, the long distance at Connorton on Wednesday, and the relay at Pomingalarna on Thursday. Associated with these events will be the Riverina Run, a public event that has attracted over 500 entries including Olympic marathoner Martin Dent and Australia's oldest orienteer, 95-year-old Herman Wehner from Canberra.
Enter-on-Day will be possible at CSU and the three mid-week events for Wagga residents who might like to try orienteering.
The carnival will conclude on the weekend of Oct 5 and 6 with the Oceania Middle Distance and Long Distance Championships near Beechworth.
Deb Davey's selection is just reward for her consistent performances at national and international level for the past 3 years. Deb will team with Ballarat's Jenny Bourne and Newcastle's Hilary Wood in the W60 age-class and should be too classy for the New Zealanders.
On the local front, WaggaRoos conducted a sprint orienteering race at Rawlings Park last Sunday. On the 4km course in the early part of the race Stuart Young and Jack Janetzki were just a few seconds apart to each control. However, in the middle part of the course as the race moved from the ovals to the bushland Stuart was able to navigate a bit better and eventually won by 5 minutes. Deb Davey came in third a further minute behind.
On the 2.9km course, Imogen Metcalfe ventured out on her own for the first time and excelled. Laura Shelton started very well and after 3 controls had built up a 3 minute advantage. Imogen had started more slowly but as her confidence built she started to catch up. Laura made a navigational error between 7 and 8 allowing Imogen to take the lead which she maintained despite a miss at the 9th control. Wes Campbell came in third.
Elena and Tahlia Franklin and Charli Speers tried orienteering for the first time. They sensibly tackled the 2km Easy course first and enjoyed it so much they then completed the 4km course.
Results: 4.0km Course: Stuart Young 25.13; Jack Janetzki 31.26; Deb Davey 32.31; Elena Franklin 63.27; Talia Franklin & Charli Speers 65.01. 2.9km Course: Imogen Metcalfe 33.10; Wes Campbell 38.45; John Oliver 39.18; Laura Shelton 51.11; Kath Oliver 60.55. 2.0km Course: Elena Franklin 24.28; Talia Franklin & Charli Speers 24.41.

Ulysses
Les, Oscar, Gino, Noel and Gerhard headed off into the sunlight toward Lockhart, continuing down to Walbundrie where they took the Berrigan Road to Corowa. Hunger and thirst were starting to set in so they continued on to Rutherglen and settled into the Pie Shop. Oscar overdid it a bit, he had a pie and a sausage roll which topped himself up for tea as well. Gerhard and Gino had to be back in Wagga by about 2pm so they took off by themselves straight up the highway and byway. After a suitable rest period, the rest came back via Howlong, Culcairn, Morven and Mangoplah, clocking up 380kms for the day.
Meet and Greet on Saturday was a nice pleasant affair in the sunshine with the usual discussions taking place.
The Sunday ride had only two starters, being Sue and Steve Oldfield. The last I heard the were heading down toward Holbrook and beyond.
Woody is going to organise an overnight ride on October 16 to Mitta Mitta and beyond. Watch this space.
On October 6, Mark Williams will be leading a ride and knowing Mark it will be a good day out.
October 12 sees an escort ride for Dee and Guy's wedding which, I believe will be galavanting through Bourkelands. And on the 20th of October will be the annual Pink Ribbon Ride.
The next Branch meeting will be on October 15 in the Radio Club Rooms, which are located in Small Street. The meeting gets underway at 7.30pm but the doors open at 7pm for you to mingle prior to the meeting and discuss what needs to be discussed.
We are well into getting the 2019 Toy Run off the ground and are looking for donations and new toys. The age span we cater for is about 3 to 15 and this year's run will be held on December 7.
