Others, like Warren Lynch, who has just reduced his handicap to a career-best 1, have been running hot simply because they can play the game.

Last Monday's nine-hole vets stroke comp saw Warren shoot under par, yet again, for 34 nett and a win from Mick de Vries 35 nett. Danny McIntyre, the amazing Bert Adams, Don Kirwan, Clarrie Ridley and Jim Briggs followed with 37 nett, then Lex Boardman with 38 nett on a c/b.

In Thursday's event, the in-form Danny McIntyre chipped and putted like a demon to card 28 nett for a one-shot win from John Burkinshaw. Les Hodges followed with 31 nett, from Russell Parr, Bill O'Rourke and Peter McDonald 32 nett, then Peter Briggs 33, and Roger Taylor 34 nett on a c/b.

The ladies played the second round of the Golf NSW and President's Trophy stroke event last Tuesday, and in Div 1, Monica Kember scored 69 nett for a strong win, from Kitty Howe 73 nett, on a c/b from Marg Hogan, also on a c/b.

It was as tight as it gets in Div 2, with Fay Baker scoring 71 nett to collect the major prize in a three-way c/b from Gloria Vonarx and Una Pocock.

Sandra Donohue carded 70 nett to claim Div 3 honours, from Jan Leonard 75 nett on a c/b from June Rootes, once again on a c/b. NTPs to Lyn Donohoe, Una Pocock and June Rootes. Ball comp to 77 nett.

Marg Gregurke's hole-in-one on the short par three 2nd stole the show in Friday's Doug Sutherland Memorial Trophy Stableford comp. But Marg didn't stop there, rattling up an incredible 50 stableford points to take out the Div 3 prize from the unfortunate Fay Baker, who scored 47 which would of course been a winning score on any other day. In Div 1, Marg Hogan scored 45 for a win, from Anne Leonard 43 pts. Trish Gray had success in Div 2, also with 45, from Lorraine Hickey, 40. NTPs to Pat Tooze, Carmel Pearce and Marg Bradley. Ball comp to 39.

The first nine (blue tees) of Wednesday's members stableford comp went to Eddie Wall with 22 points, from John Mitchell, 21, on a c/b from Bob Alexander.

The second nine (white tees) was taken out by Eddie's playing partner, John Burkinshaw, with 23 on a c/b from Peter Friedlieb, then Mick Landrigan, who picked up a swag in side-bets with 21 on a c/b.

Mick Laurent made the most of his eagle on the par four 8th hole by putting together 41 points for a win in A Grade in Saturday's members' stableford event, while the consistent Bob Alexander claimed second spot with 40.

In B Grade, Zac Nimmo fired up for 44 and a c/b win from Rex Kember, while in Owen Guthrie also carded 44 to get the better of Rowan Laurent, 42, in C Grade. NTPs to Mick Laurent, Zac Nimmo and Matt Tooze. Ball comp to 38 on a c/b.

Kylie Baker had some sort of day out in Saturday's Business Girls' comp, adding her NTP tee shot on the 18th to her eagle three on the par five 10th, for a round of 45, and a win from runner-up, Pam Kellam, 43.

Tim Barlow's 18 hole Sunday Stableford comp saw Maureen Martin's remarkable return from serious injury continue. Maureen scored 45 points, a great score, which was bettered only by Eddie Wall's 47. Others who featured were Tracy Peek and Steve Seetana with 44. Balls to 43 points.

There is no tennis today in the Wednesday Junior Doubles Tennis Competition at Bolton Park. The competition will resume next week at the usual time.

The competition is open to all players that are able to serve. To enter, turn up at the courts before the start time of 4pm, finish at 6pm.

Intersport Australia gift cards are awarded at the end of the competition for those players playing five matches, as well as a best and fairest award.

Leading the competition is Michael Paolucci-Ellis on 23 points followed by Victoria Grantham on 171/2 points, with Seth and Wyatt Piltz tied on 121/2 points then Beau Bradley on 101/2 points making up the top five placings. This week's winner of McDonald's Sports Award was Michael Paolucci-Ellis.

The PM Nominated Pairs saw Ron "Kiwi" Campbell & Max Simmons grab the spoils with 14.50+20, with runners up being John Swaffield & Brian Lawrence on 14+10.

The major jackpot of $360 was shared by Ricky Whybrow, Ron Cameron, Dickie White, Peter Haby, John Cowper & Kyle Cowper.

In Friday's AM Blind Draw Wally Paton and "Johnno" Johnson scored 14 to grab the cash from Trevor Urquhart and Ken Howell on 9.25+11.

In the Sunday AM Mixed Blind Draw, with a score of 19, Wally Paton and Frank Boyd scooped the pool with Bob Young and Chris Waring coming in second on 14 points.

On a sadder note, this week we said goodbye to one of our staunch bowlers, Tony Suckling.

Tony did not played a lot in the last couple of seasons due to health reasons but remained a very close supporter of the club. RIP Tony, you will not be forgotten.

What absolutely great motorcycle weather we have had over the past week. The only scheduled ride was last Wednesday, when four local motorcycle cowboys took off to explore the district. Gerhard, Oscar, Gino, and Gary cracked the whips and headed for Jingellic, but when they got as far as Cookardinia the rain was starting to spoil a perfectly perfect day. They continued on to Holbrook then back tracked across to Culcairn through Morven and had lunch at the bakery in Culcairn. Lunch over, it was straight back home before the rain took over completely.

Meet and Greet was not overrun with coffee tasters, but it was good to see El Presidente back from his tour of Queensland where his dear wife did a test of a good percentage of the outback hospitals. She is back home now and on the improve, but their old faithful Toyota Hilux developed some rather rugged engine noises. Big Trev reckons he got a fair dose of watered down fuel, which diesel donks don't particularly enjoy.

Saturday was a perfect day and I am surprised there were not more people out enjoying the sun. Our next outing will be the Tri-Branch meeting in Narrandera on September 6, 7 and 8. The Sydney branch will be having an odyssey in Tumut on the long weekend in October, starting Friday 4. All members are welcome. For those coming from the north, there is the cruise down the Hume Freeway to the Gundagai turnoff, then signposting through South Gundagai to go via Brungle and Wee Jasper roads. Alternately, get off the Hume past Goulburn and travel via Queenbeyan. From there, it is the long route through Cooma, Adaminaby and Talbingo via the Monaro and Snowy Mountains highways for those that have the time. For the more adventurous there is the shorter, windier route via Stromlo, Brindabella, Argalong and Bombowlee Creek.

Coming from the south there are all those lovely Snowy Mountains roads coming from Cooma on the east side, Corryong, Khankoban and Cabramurra due south and Tallangatta and Tumbarumba on the west side. Spoilt for choice of magical motorcycling roads.

Regional 'westies' can wander in from Wagga Wagga via Tarcutta and Adelong. Whichever way you arrive, plan on being settled into your accomodation in time to tour the township.

WaggaRoos are finalising arrangements for the 2019 Oceania Carnival, which will start in Wagga in late September. The carnival is an international orienteering primarily between New Zealand and Australia, although other Pacific nations will be represented.

Oceania 2019 will include eight orienteering events in nine days from Saturday, September 28 to Sunday, October 6. The carnival will start with the Oceania Sprint Championships at CSU. This will be followed by the Australian Long Distance Championships and Relay Championships near Cootamundra. Midweek, the Australian Schools Sprint distance, Long distance and Relay Orienteering Championships will be conducted in Wagga between state and national school teams. Associated with these events will be the Riverina Run, a three-day public competition. The carnival will then move to Beechworth in Victoria for the Oceania Long Distance and Middle Distance Championships.

On the local scene, WaggaRoos won the final event in the Interclub Orienteering Challenge against Albury last Sunday but lost the series by just 13 points.

In the Interclub Orienteering Challenge points are awarded to participants for participating and completing their course and to the place getters in each course. The points earned by placegetters are weighted in favour of the longer and harder navigation courses.

The event was conducted in the northern part of the Livingstone National Park and State Conservation Reserve where the broad steep hills are prickly scrub are unforgiving when navigational errors are made. Time was easily lost if route choice was not carefully made.

There was an excellent turnout with almost 50 people including several family groups participating. WaggaRoos started the day 44 points in arrears and despite some good performances could not completely wipe of the deficit.

On the 5.7km hard course although Matt Flower (A) finished second behind ACT's John Scown and scored valuable bonus points for the Albury club, WaggaRoos Stuart Young and Tadeusz Davenport were just seconds behind and by finishing ahead of crack Albury trio Raf Freire, Leigh Privett and Rob Simmonds helped WaggaRoos take a slight three-point lead.

Then WaggaRoos junior Jack Janetzki and veteran Alex Davey finished first and second respectively on the 4.5km hard course ahead of several Albury orienteers to increase the WaggaRoos lead to seven.

Albury reduced the deficit when Emma and Indiana Flower won the 3.5km moderate course, but a succession of WaggaRoos finishing before the next Albury orienteer ensured WaggaRoos won this course and slipped out to a 15-point lead.

This was extended on 1.8km easy course where WaggaRoos were unchallenged by Albury.

At the end of the day, WaggaRoos won the event 63:32 but Albury won the series 376:363 in what was the closest competition for a number of years.

The next local event will be conducted at Rawlings Park on Sunday, September 15 at 10am from the eastern end of Angel Street, Lake Albert. Newcomers are welcome.
