ULYSSES
About nine bodies turned up for a ride last Wednesday, but they had all left their bikes at home. The weather was absolutely diabolical, very wet and very cold so the nine bods enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and went home and sat in front of the fire where they contemplated their next move for the day.
Saturday turned out to be a nice sunny day, although the degrees centigrade were still on the low side, however about 10 turned out for coffee and some cake at the Busy Bean Café in Gurwood Street.
Sunday was a magnificent day, with a clear blue sky and six of the team took off for the hills, going out through Tarcutta and then Humula to Rosewood where they pulled in for morning tea at Gone Barney. After a bit of a spell the next destination was Walwa, where lunch at the general store was the order of the day. One or two even topped up with fuel, and you now have a choice of 91 and 98 octane. Lunch over the ride progressed to Holbrook and then home via Mangoplah. A great ride, albeit a little on the cold side, especially when the snow-covered peaks were spied in the distance.
Apart from the Wednesday rides, the next Sunday ride will be on June 16, leaving from McDonald's Edward Street car park at 9.30am.
The next branch meeting will be on June 18 at the Radio Club Rooms in Small Street, starting at 7.30pm.
On July 7, the ride for the day will be a short stint around town, ending up at The Red Steer motel for a Christmas in July-type lunch.
Keep warm and keep well until we meet again. Go and have flu shot, there are a couple of nasties floating around out there.

ORIENTEERING
The Matthews family had an excellent day at the WaggaRoos orienteering event on Willans Hill last Sunday, with success on both the easy and moderate navigation courses and winning the handicap for the day.
The lovely sunny morning attracted a number of family groups, many attempting orienteering for the first time.
Starting from the south-west end of Willans Hill near the corner of Mimosa and Erica streets, the 1900m easy navigation course allowed participants to make use of the numerous track and paths in the area, although one leg required following a long earth wall through the scrub.
Times were quite close and competitive despite many newcomers.
Phoebe and Simon Matthews were quickest around finishing, just more than a minute ahead of Jarrah Mestan and Julie Gooding. Freya Matthews was not far off the pace and finished well in third place. The Farquhar males, Duncan and Alexander, finished just ahead of the Farquhar females, Emily and Ella.
After their successful completion of the easy course, Simon, Freya and Phoebe Matthews then teamed up to attempt the 2.2 km moderate navigation course. Laura and Suzy Shelton did similarly.
Although the distance is only slightly longer than the easy course the moderate course challenges participants with options for cutting across country through the scrub, whereas the easy course is more constrained to obvious track and path options.
On Willans Hill, there are numerous earth walls that are relatively easy to follow, particularly when the forest floor is as open as currently.
Both groups coped well with the step up in navigation and the Matthews family added to their easy course successes, recording the quickest time on the moderate course.
Alex Davey had a convincing win on the 3.8km hard navigation course.
Both hard navigation courses included a number of control sites north of Baden Powell Drive that involved some steep uphill and downhill climbs. Alex finished well ahead of newcomer Stuart McDougall, with Bob Moore managing to grab third place ahead of Dale Clegg.
On the 5.4km hard course, Briohny Seaman finished a strong 12 minutes ahead of John Oliver.
The next event will start at 10am on Sunday, June 26 at Connorton. Drive south from Jubilee Park towards Mangoplah on the Holbrook Road. After about 6km, and just after crossing Stringybark Creek, turn right into the Connorton property and follow the signs to the assembly area.
