My husband and I are having a huge dispute over abuse. He is very insulting and not only calls me names but yells when he could speak and insults my friends and family in an attempt to hurt me.
I have told him consistently that he is a bully and his treatment of me borders on domestic abuse.
He tells me I am being precious and to get over myself.
I am sick of it. Tired of being put down. He isn't listening.
Your advice please.
AGONY AUNT
A BULLY will never admit their behaviour is unacceptable.
.... his behaviour is not only abusive but unkind and just plain wrong.
Call it what he likes, his behaviour is not only abusive but unkind and just plain wrong.
As humans in the middle of a disagreement there will be an inclination to wound the other party so that we can "win" the battle.
That doesn't mean it is okay. Personal insults and dragging friends and family into arguments as a method of hurting your partner is low, and chips away at the foundation of your relationship. Call him out and tell him you won't accept it any longer.
Walk away from him every time he starts. He cannot insult and abuse an empty space.
