COMING EVENTS

SIXof the regular Wednesday Riders departed the scene from Billy's at about 9:11am and took the road of least resistance to Coolamon via Euberta. From Coolamon they all tracked up to Ardlethan where they stopped for a breather. They are not getting any younger, you know, and they knock up easily. However 20 minutes at Ardlethan and the hunger pangs set in so off they went to Temora and lobbed at the Terminus Hotel for Lunch. After lunch the crew motored home past Old Junee and Wallacetown.

Meet and Greet on Saturday was a sombre affair being Annette's final day behind the grill and coffee machine, we will miss her attempts to try and keep us in order and we will miss her friendly service which she has given us over a number of years. At 79 she believes she needs a sea change and has another job lined up to keep her busy. God Bless Annette, let's hope the new owners are half as good.

Our next ride is this Sunday and will take us to somewhere (I have no idea). Just turn up at McDonalds Edward Street car park at about 8.30am and all will be revealed. And then the same again on Sunday, May 19 turn up at 8:30am and more will be revealed, although by next week I may have some more interesting detail. The next Branch meeting will be held in The Radio Club Rooms, in Small Street, on May 21 at 7.30pm.

All Wednesday rides leave from Billy's Café at 9am, so that is May 8, 15, 22, and 29 but as of June 5 rides will start at 9.30am to give you an extra half hour in bed during the winter months. Same goes for the Sunday rides leaving from Maccas, as of June 2 they will get under way at 9.30am. Have fun on your pride and joy and we will see you on the road somewhere, sometime.

THE WaggaRoos won the second event of the Interclub Orienteering Challenge against Albury in the Murraguldrie State Forest last Sunday. All courses offered a variety of challenges to test navigational skills. Starting at the south-east end of the forest participants had to work their way up some steeps slopes looking for small gullies or particular rock features before working their way around some longer legs across a plateau and finishing with a series of short legs through detailed rocky terrain.

In the Interclub Orienteering Challenge points are awarded to participants for participating and completing their course and to the place getters in each course. The points earned by place getters are weighted in favour of the longer and harder navigation courses.

Each of the four courses was won by a WaggaRoos orienteer which provided valuable points for the club.

Although John Oliver (W) won the 5.9km course and got WaggaRoos off to a good start he was the only WaggaRoo on that course. As a consequence Albury scored more than half their points for the day on this course. John's finished almost 8 minutes ahead of Albury's Fab Andreoni with Rob Simmons (A) a further 7 minute back in third place. Albury won this course 21:8.

WaggaRoos Stuart Young had an even more convincing win on the 4.1km Hard course finishing almost 13 minutes ahead of Liz Wood (A). It was an impressive performance in the tricky terrain. WaggaRoos junior Jack Janetzki had some problems early in the course but still did well enough to finish third ahead of Albury's Norm McCann and give WaggaRoos a 12:8 win on this course.

WaggaRoos then scored a quinella on the 3.3km Moderate course which required two traversings of a reasonably steep hillside. Dale Clegg (W) improved considerably on his performance at Rocky Hill three weeks ago to win by almost 18 minutes ahead of WaggaRoos juniors Jo and Cam McDougall. The quinella gave WaggaRoos aan 11:6 win on the Moderate course.

WaggaRoos then finished well scoring well on the 2.0km Easy course. WaggaRoos Junior Tom Janetzki won ahead of the Farquhar family. Robbie and Ian McDougall finished third and ahead of the first Albury participant to give WaggaRoos a 16:4 win on the Easy course.

Overall WaggaRoos won the day 47: 39 but after the two events Albury lead 102:94.

On Thursday, May 9 WaggaRoos will conduct the Riverina Schools orienteering Championships at Willans Hill. The next local event will commence at 10am on Sunday, May 12 in the Victory Memorial Gardens near the corner of Ivan Jack Dr and Morrow streets.

FRANK Veliscek kicked the week off with a win in Monday's nine-hole Vets comp. Frank carded 33 nett for a one-shot win from Tony Brunskill, followed by Phil Powell, Les Hodges and Clarrie Ridley on 37 nett. Clarrie then put together a 35 nett score in Thursday's comp to get home on a c/b from Eddie Wall and Tony Pollard, followed by Phil Powell on 36 nett.

The ladies competed in a stableford event on Tuesday, when in-form Division 1 player, Maria McManus, scored 35 pts for a c/b win from June Byrnes. In Division 2, Marg Hogan set herself up for an easy win with 40 pts, seven clear of runner-up, Jan Marks, 33 pts, while Pat Grieve scored 34 pts to collect the C Grade voucher, from Fay Baker 31 pts on a c/b. Ball comp to 27 pts on a c/b. The girls returned for another stableford event on Friday, and in Division 1, Dee Harley got home in a close one with 38 pts, on a c/b from Jan Marks, also on a c/b. Sandra Mellen played to her handicap for 36 pts to win Division 2, from Una Pocock 32 pts on a c/b. NTP's to Maria McManus (Div 1), Carmel Pearce (Div 2) and Colleen Mavroudis (Div 3). Balls to 29 pts on a c/b.

Big-hitting Steve Hall collected some cash on the side when he scored 38 pts to win the A Grade event in Wednesday's Members' Stableford Comp, one point clear of the consistent Warren Lynch, 37 pts, followed by Bob Alexander on 36 pts. In B Grade, Eddie Wall ran hot for 43 pts and a five-point win from Les Ryan, 38 pts, on a c/b from Mick de Vries. NTP's to Roger Taylor, Max Horsnell and John McLeod. Ball comp to 34 pts on a c/b. Although the course is looking better by the day, thanks to the introduction of new golf course machinery, and the tireless efforts of our greenkeeping staff and Volunteer Vets, conditions were still pretty tough for Saturday's Members' Monthly Medal stroke event - not one golfer in any grade able to put together a nett score in the 60's. Paul Hallan collected the A Grade voucher with 72 nett, on a c/b from John Dare, followed by Warren Lynch, 73 nett. In B Grade, Kevin Rafter scored 70 nett for a win, from Zac Nimmo, 73 nett on a c/b from Frank Veliscek, while Country Club visitor, Isaac Mark, took out C Grade with 70 nett, from Eddie Wall, 71 nett on a c/b from Darryl Dickinson. NTP's to Keith Bevan, Rowan Laurent and Mick Hazell. Ball comp to 75 nett.

Eddie Wall finished off a productive week of golf by scoring 39 pts for a win in Tim's Sunday 18-hole Stableford Comp, beating Brad Watson and Darren Johnston 37, Roy Sanders 36 and Steve Rodham 35 pts c/b.

TENNIS resumes today, May 1, in the Wednesday Junior Doubles Tennis Competition at the Bolton Park Tennis Complex. The competition is open to all players that are able to serve. To enter turn up at the courts before the start time of 4pm finish at 6pm sharp. Sportsmans Warehouse giftcards awarded at the end of the competition for those players playing five matches as well as a Best and Fairest award.

Leading the competition is Isaac Schiller on 521/2 points followed by Michael Paolucci-Ellis on 48 points with Robert Grantham and Alastair Wright tied on 47 points and Caden Maxwell on 41 points making up the top five placings.

Winners of the McDonalds Sports Awards this week were Robert Grantham, Yassin El Sanabary and Kelsey Atkinson.
