EXPLORERS RIFLE
MORE wind to keep shooters thinking at Lockhart last Saturday. Mainly from the right but often dropping off and occasionally turning and coming from the left. Anywhere between one left and three-and-a-half points right. You had to keep your eye on it! Neville seem to get the best of it with some fine shooting.

ULYSSES
A FEW turned up for coffee last week but only three riders headed off into the clear blue skies. Oscar was the leader of two new members whose names escape me at the moment. They headed up the Olympic Way to Cootamundra and from there went across to Coolac and then down to Gundagai where they propped for lunch at the RSL. After lunch they motored down the Hume to the Sturt and arrived back home in time for a Poppy Nap.
Saturday was a quiet affair at Billy's and we had to eat inside due to some kerfuffle with the council over the outside tables. That didn't matter, the ten or so of us who fronted up had a nice chat and coffee before heading home in pristine weather.
On Sunday four bikes and a Spyder took off for Beechworth and took the track through Culcairn, Walbundrie, Howlong and Chiltern. They had the usual morning tea stop at the Howlong Bakery and it was at this point that Crafty turned around and went back home. The rest went on to Beechworth, had lunch, a look-about and came back home through Wodonga and the Olympic Way, arriving home at around 4pm after a beautiful day's ride.
Our next event on the calendar is our Branch AGM which will be held at the Radio Club Rooms in Small Street on April 16.
There will be sausage sizzle starting at 6.30pm and the meeting will get under way at 7:30pm.
All positions are vacant so if you want a job put your hand up or forever hold your peace.
Bob Scott has been gifted a plaque for his many years guiding the Pipe Band to fame and fortune.
It will be laid, in the Baylis Street footpath, on May 14 which is the day of his 80th birthday and as time gets nearer we will have found out the location so you may come along and witness the proceedings.
No ride has been scheduled for Easter Sunday but if you feel like going for a squirt turn up at McDonalds car park in Edward Street around 8:30am or do a ring around and see if you can drum up some other interested riders. This is the best time for riding with our beautiful autumn weather which will probably disappear in five or six weeks time.
When I was at the Rally in Mornington, early in March I went to a safety forum where a lady spoke on many things Safe, but one subject that pricked my ears was the whys and wherefores of motorcycling clothing etc. Manufacturers make all sorts of claims as to the preventative nature of their respective product but all is not what it seems. If you are going to purchase some new gear, be it gloves, jackets, pants, helmets etc, go to the Motocap website and suss out the actual facts regarding the claims made about the various products. You may be surprised! www.motocap.com.au. See you on the road sometime.

ORIENTEERING
STUART Young and Sean Sunley had excellent wins in the WaggaRoos orienteering event at Rocky Hill in Kooringal last Sunday.
It was the first time this area had been used for orienteering and the new map was literally dotted with rock features. The only tracks in the area are the perimeter road and the trail over the main hill which meant participants on the harder navigational courses really had to focus on the contour detail and use flat rocks and thickets as the main navigational aids. The power poles on the lower slopes became valuable features for checking ones position.
The steep slopes were as difficult to come down as they were to go up and challenged participants with decisions on whether to go straight and face a difficult ascent or descent or to try and contour around the hill and alleviate the pain.
The hard navigation courses comprised some longer legs across the hillside, a few physically demanding legs over the ridge followed by some short sharp legs involving various directional changes.
On the 3.4 km hard course the battle for placings was quite tight with final placings largely being decided by accuracy of navigation rather than running speed. Stuart Young prevailed holding off veteran John Oliver by just over three minutes with NSW representative Briohny Seaman well in the mix a further minute behind. These three were well ahead of the rest of the field. By contrast Sean Sunley won the 2.7km hard course comfortably from Wes Campbell and Shani Rajasekera.
The 2.5km moderate navigational course had fewer serious hill climbs but the scarcity of tracks made it somewhat of a challenge. Iona and Brendan Judd triumphed over the Hatherly family by just over 10 minutes.
The 1.4km easy navigation course did utilize the few tracks in the area and comprised a slow climb to the top of the hill and a quick descent thereafter picking up various boulder features along the way. Rob and Joannah McDougall ripped around the course in a very quick 12:38 to finish in almost half the time of their parents and second place getters Deb and Ian McDougall. The fast pace also helped Joannah win handicap honours for the day. Julie Gooding and son Jarrah finished in third place just ahead of the Rudd family group.
The next event will be held in the Murraguldrie State Forest commencing at 10am on Sunday, April 28. From Wagga drive south towards Tumbarumba. About 6km after crossing over the Hume Highway turn right at the main Murraguldrie State Forest sign and follow the orienteering signs to the start. This will be the second event of the Interclub Challenge against Albury.
