ORIENTEERING
BRIOHNY Seaman had a superb win in event seven of the WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series in Estella last Thursday evening.
As usual participants had to visit specific locations in the area to find the answer to questions within a set time limit. Questions included identifying particular features within laneways, particulars about various signs, and numbers on electrical sub-stations. Points were awarded for correct answers and deducted for exceeding the time limit.
Starting from the playground in Manneke Park the course included a number of lower value control sites in the northern part of Estella and some higher value ones further away to provide participants with the option of running further to sites with higher value or obtaining a high score by visiting many more sites close by. Although the numerous laneways and open areas allowed reasonable access between the various cul-de-sacs most found themselves doubling back and retracing footsteps during their course.
Briohny Seaman chose to participate on the 30-minute course to pick up many of the higher valued sites and in spite of returning three minutes early amassed an outstanding 215 points. This was 75 points more than second placegetter Alex Davey who has been consistently winning summer series events this season and just 15 points fewer than John Oliver who won the 45-minute course. Pauline Moore also did very well finishing in third place on the 30 minute course and won the handicap for the evening.
The next event in the WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series will start at 6pm at Wagga Wagga Beach.
Results: 30 Minute Course: Briohny Seaman 215 points; Alex Davey 140; Pauline Moore 135; Bob Moore 115. 45 Minute Course: John Oliver 230.

TWELVE veterans arrived at Billy’s last Wednesday and of those 12, eight took off for a ride in pretty much ideal conditions. First destination was Murrumburrah after travelling through Junee and Cootamundra. Of course thirst and hunger had set in by then so they pulled over and took care of the dietary needs before setting off to Jugiong. And this is where the bunch split. Les, Mark, Gary, Mark, Gerhard and Woody took the turn to Jugiong which is near the top of the hill on the way to Harden, but not Oscar and Big Trev they just blissfully sailed on heading toward Boorowa, finally finding the Hume Highway and then coasting back down to Gundagai where the caught up with the main bunch. Lunch at the Soldiers Club was the next task and it was near 2pm before they mounted up and followed the Hume to the Sturt junction arriving home around 3pm as the afternoon temperature was starting to get a little uncomfortable. A good day out enjoyed by all the participants.
Saturday saw the usual crowd at Billy’s for Meet and Greet on Saturday, discussing the usual amount of clap-trap, over the usual mug of coffee.
We didn’t have an official ride on Sunday but the wife and I took a trip up to Tumut and Talbingo for the day and I have never seen so many bikes on the road – they were everywhere enjoying idyllic conditions. We struck a couple of gentlemen on their way back home to the Blue Mountains. The had been to Melbourne and on their way north from there they nearly froze with the icy rain and wind, seems they were only kitted out for hot weather!
At the rally there will be a road safety forum on February 28, which I believe will be worth while attending.
Presentations will be from the following:
- Tim Conboy– Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. Will be giving us all the latest of our legal rights as motorcycle riders and what they have been fighting for on our behalf.
- Kenn Beer – Safe System Solutions. Kenn is a specialist road safety engineer and accredited trainer with 18 years of experience in road safety. During his time at VicRoads, Kenn held a variety of positions including Senior Road Safety Engineer, Motorcycle Safety Coordinator, Team Leader Road Safety Projects and Manager Program Development. Kenn is recognised as a world leader in motorcycle safety infrastructure. While at VicRoads he spent years managing the Motorcycle Safety Infrastructure Program.
- Dr. Liz De Rome, PhD – Deakin University (Motocap): Dr Liz de Rome has worked in motorcycle safety research and strategic planning for almost 20 years. Liz developed the first Australian motorcycle safety strategic plan for the Motorcycle Council of NSW including their unique website to provide riders with evidence-based information about motorcycle safety. Her Gear Study was a world-first cohort study of motorcycle crashes to investigate the effectiveness of motorcycle protective clothing.
There will be a ride this coming Sunday but full details have not been worked out yet. What I can tell you is that lunch will be at the Cheese Factory in Coolamon. The rest is weather dependent. Be at McDonald’s, Edward Street, at about 8.30am.
