ORIENTEERING
ALEX Davey carried his good pre-Christmas form into the New Year with a win in event five of the WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series last Thursday evening. The event was held around Bourkelands and involved visiting specific locations in the area to find the answer to questions within a set time limit. Because of the warm weather participants were restricted to a 30-minute time limit to find as many answers as possible. Questions included identifying particular features in gardens, specific wording on signs, and the numbers on specific power poles. Points were awarded for correct answers and deducted for exceeding the time limit.

Starting from the playground at the southern end of Yarrawah Crescent the course was designed with a number of lower value control sites close by and fewer higher valued ones further away. This was in anticipation of warm running conditions and provided participants with the option of running further to sites with higher value or obtaining a high score by visiting many more sites close by.
Alex Davey chose to run further afield to higher valued sites whereas Wes Campbell and the Sunleys chose to stay closer in. Interestingly Alex was the only one who managed to finish within the allotted time limit. As the time limit approached, those closer in were tempted to take one more site for a few extra points because it did not seem to be far out of the way. Alex finished with an excellent score of 105 well ahead of Wes Campbell (60) and Julie and Sean Sunley (45).
The next event in the WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series will start at 6pm at Manneke Park in Pugsley Drive, Estella just north of Doman Street. Results: 30 Minute Course: Alex Davey 105 points; Wes Campbell 60; Julie and Sean Sunley 45.

EXPLORERS RIFLE CLUB
OUR first shoot of 2019 was on Saturday along with the AGM. Thanks to those who came out early to do a bit of tidying up on the range. Including Rob who had a good run on the mower and got three ranges mowed and Graham who cleaned out the clubhouse. At 1pm we had the AGM and we were shooting by 3pm.
Next week there are still a few jobs to do. still have a number of tyres to cut and remove from around trees on the range as requested by FAR. More lawn mowing and bracing our sound wall which is leaning from some strong winds during the break. Graham is also planning on finishing the lining of the club house. So if you can make it out to the range in the morning to help that would be appreciated.
The World Championships start in NZ tomorrow. The NZ Championships finished on Saturday with Australian Jim Bailey winning. Also Chris Schwebel became U25 World Champion. Today Australia also won the Veterans, U25 and U21 Teams matches. Tomorrow the Individual World Championship competition starts followed by the Palma Teams match next weekend. You can see results at https://www.lrwc2019.nz/results-2/
Conditions for our shoot were still pretty warm and the target rifle shooters certainly felt it with their heavy coats on. There was a bit of wind of course – it is Lockhart range after all! Mostly from the right but occasionally turning down range or a slight amount of left. Enough to catch out the unwary!

ULYSSES
WELL we had four starters last Wednesday, Les, Mark, Gerhard and Oscar, who all left Billy’s at 9.10am and took the road through to Ladysmith and Kyeamba, stopping at Rosewood for a breather. From there they motored over the Pine Leaf Road to Wondalga and headed to Tumut for a stop at the Bakery for Brunch. Mark had to fill up – he left Wagga half full (or is it half empty). After the usual coffee and so forth they all headed back home the most direct possible as the heat was starting to ramp up. By the time they arrived back at camp it was hovering around the 39 degree mark. Like riding in a fan-forced oven.
There was a reasonable turn out at Meet and Greet on Saturday but nobody stayed for long as the heat was, again, starting to be felt. So we come to Sunday with only three starters for what turned out to be a good ride in mostly good conditions. Les, Ian and Gerhard left Macca’s at around 9:15 and aimed for Gundagai travelling through Wantabadgery and Nangus. When they arrived at Gundagai Tourist Information Centre the resident chimney (Ian) had to light up and Gerhard having over filled the tank had to attend to that matter. Les just waited patiently so they could resume their journey on to Tumut via Brungle. More coffee, cold drinks and tucker at the Bakery and with that out of the way they took the Pine Leaf Road to Rosewood, and then from Rosewood back home through Kyeamba and Gregadoo Road. By all reports as they climbed up over the hills to Rosewood the temperature fell quite dramatically and stayed at around the late 20’s until they approached home base. All in all it turned out to be a very pleasant ride and they just got home before the ten- minute storm hit.
The next Branch meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 19 at the Radio Club Rooms in Small Street. The doors will open at 7pm and the meeting get under way at 7.30pm. Most of the subject matter will concern the Mornington Rally on February 25. There will be a ride on Sunday 24 for those not going to the Rally and we will let you know where next week.
