WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
THE vets played a nine-hole 4BBB event last Monday, and it was as close as it could get, with the team of Don Thorne and Don Kirwan notching up 22 pts to secure a c/b win from Phil Powell and John Hazell, and Clarrie Ridley and Roy Sanders. In Thursday’s stableford event, Ken Batt shot the lights out with 24 pts for an easy win from Peter Kirkman, Grahame Winson and Don Kirwan, each with 20 pts, and Peter Briggs and Bernie Mogford, 19 pts on a c/b.
Last Tuesday’s Ladies’ Summer Cup comp saw Pam Seymour accumulate 21 pts for a win in Div 1, from Kitty Howe 20 pts, while the results in Div 2 were identical, with Carole Gardner scoring 21 pts for a one-point win from Colleen Mavroudis. NTP to Jenny Hazell. The girls played a stroke event on Friday, and in Div 1, Billie Johnstone put together a solid nine-holes of golf for a 32 nett result, and a win from Ros Tilden 34, and Pam Kellam, 35 nett. In Div 2, Joan Veerhuis led the way with 34 nett, from Vi Gardner 35 nett on a c/b from Lorraine McGowan. NTP to Billie Johnstone.
Thanks to a chipping lesson from Tim Barlow, which admittedly took a while to sink in, Grahame Winson finally broke a long winning drought when he scored 41 pts to claim the A Grade voucher in last Wednesday’s Members’ Stableford comp, while the far more consistent John Dare collected second place with 37 pts, on a c/b from John Parker. In B Grade, Gary Chamberlain picked up the major prize with 39 pts, from Bruce Chalmers and Bruce Yeatman, each on 37 nett. NTP’s went to Ray Gladman, Warren Lynch and Peter Barnes. Ball comp to 36 pts on a c/b.
Members returned for a 4BBB stableford event on Saturday, when the father/son combination of Colin and Brodie Moore teamed up for a great score of 49 pts, to beat the Peter Barnes (44 individual pts) and Rex Kember (25 pts on the front nine), and Gary Chamberlain and Peter Taylor, on a c/b. Individual honours on the day went to Peter Taylor with a sensational 47 pts, from poor old Barney 44, and young gun, Josh Conlan, 43 pts. NTP’s to Peter Taylor, Doug Emery and Steve Purcell. Ball comp to teams with 44 pts.
Tim’s Sunday nine-hole stableford comp was won by Mick Hazell, who shot under par off his 2 handicap for 21 pts, from Rick Leonard, 19 pts on a c/b. Ball comp to 17 pts on a c/b.
ORIENTEERING
IN ONLY his second start in this format, Alex Redhead won event 3 of WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series last Thursday evening. The event was held around Tatton and involved visiting specific locations in the area to find the answer to questions within a set time limit. Because of the warm weather participants were restricted to a 30 minute time limit to find as many answers as possible. Questions included identifying particular features on playground equipment, specific wording on signs, and the numbers on specific power poles. Points were awarded for correct answers and deducted for exceeding the time limit.
Starting from the park in Tamar Dr opposite Lachlan Pl, most opted to traverse the flatter terrain on the eastern side of Tamar Dr rather than the steeper slopes to the west. Unlike event 2 when most participants exceeded their time limit, this week most managed to finish within the 30 minutes limit.
The warm weather deterred participation but not the competition. Alex Davey continued his good form to amass an excellent 130 points in his 30 minutes but was upstaged by newcomer Alex Redhead who accumulated an excellent 135. This was only Redhead’s second event in this format and after coming last the previous week a first this week’s win was sweet.
The battle for third place was just as close with Pauling Moore just edging out Wes Campbell. Both collected 85 points but Wes suffered a 5 point time penalty for being 34 seconds late whereas Pauline finished with 2 minutes to spare.
Lindsay Wilson enjoyed a pleasant, albeit warm, afternoon walk assembling 55 points.
Event 4 in the WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series will be the last event for 2018 and will commence at 6pm next Thursday 13 December from Jack Skeers Park in Telopea Cres, Lake Albert. Results: 30 Minute Course: Alex Rehead 135; Alex Davey 130; Pauline Moore 85; Wes Campbell 80; Lindsay Wilson 55.
ULYSSES
AND so we had a pristine Wednesday last week and no one went riding!? On Saturday we had a good crowd along for Meet and Greet with Allan and Jan Wells gracing the scene with their presence. They have recently relocated to the South Coast to live and came back to see if Wagga was still alive and kicking.
There is no scheduled ride is on this Sunday but if you feel like going for a squirt be at McDonalds Edward Street car park at 9am. From there you can sort out where you may want to go.
The next big event on the calendar is Christmas Day when all the family come home to eat you out of house and home. Great to see them come and great to see them go after they have wrecked the joint.
The only function for January is the Grauers’ Breakfast at 11 Tywong Street, Ladysmith on Sunday, January 20. After a plate of Weetbix and a piece of toast the next part of the day will be a ride up into the mountains somewhere, all dependant on the temperature of the day.
The next big event will be the Mornington Rally starting on February 25.
Have a great festive season and enjoy your time on two wheels, and in some cases three.
