Ulysses
IT IS four Wednesdays in a row and no ride because of the weather, unbelievably unbelievable, so the prospective riders all just had a coffee, a chat and slunk off home in the rain. Saturday morning was not much better with only six fronting up for Meet and Greet. Really the day was not that bad, just very cold and if the others were anything like me they would have gone home.
The Pink Ribbon Ride eventuated on Sunday under a beautiful blue sky, and as I was leaving home I had a premonition and went back inside and grabbed a warm jumper. I was glad I did, struth, it was cold and didn’t really warm up until about lunchtime. Jackie Starr did herself proud, once again, and put on a spread of cakes and bickies for morning tea at Lake Centenary in Temora. Jackie had amassed a collection of raffle prizes so nearly everyone won a prize to take home, and at the end of the day she raised over $300 to donate to breast cancer research. With all the formalities out of the way we rode up to the Caltex Servo in the main street and topped the tanks. From there half of the days riders went home and the other half shot over to Cootamundra and had lunch at the Chinese restaurant. After a very nice lunch, washed down with a liquid of choice, it was Home James down the Olympic Goat Track.
The next two rides on the calendar are Talbingo on November 4 and Bright on November 18. Other things to pencil in are fundraisers for the Toy Run. The first will be at South City this coming Saturday from 8.30am until noon and November 3 we will be at the Kooringal Mall. The last one will be at the Marketplace, in Baylis Street, November 17, with the big day on Saturday, December 1, starting at Jubilee Oval at 9am.
Don’t forget the Christmas Party at the Royal Hotel in Tumut on Saturday, November 24. I believe the Royal still has some available so give them a call on 6947 1129. Please give Lorraine a call on 0428 312 336 to let her know if you are going. The rally at Mornington will soon be upon us so get your registrations in by November 9. Searoad Ferries are offering Ulysses Club members a 10 per cent discount on trips between Sorrento and Queenscliffe from February 18 until March 7, and not only but also there are lots of other things on offer for this event and I am sure it will be a ripper.
If your bike is over 30 years old and you only use it socially consider joining a Classic bike club and register it on club plates. You will save heaps.Club registration is not nearly as restrictive as it once was and you are free to use it at any time 60 days a year. Give me a call on 0408 420 766 to find out about local clubs.
Fill your tank and crack the whip for a ride out into the countryside.
WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
LAST Monday’s nine-hole Vets comp saw Tony Pollard score 31 nett to beat Danny McIntyre on a c/b, followed by Bob Alexander 32 nett, Dave Sutton and Julie Yates 33, Mick de Vries 34, and Ron Culgan, Peter Briggs and Don Kirwan on 35 nett. Thursday’s stableford comp went to Don Kirwan, who scored 23 to get home from Grahame Winson 22, then Bill O’Rourke and Ray Gladman 20, John Burkinshaw and Terry Baker 19, and Phil Powell, Tony Pollard and Peter Kirkman 18 c/b.
The ladies competed for the Scott Lennox Trophy last Tuesday, and in Division 1, Dee Harley scored 70 nett for a win from Jan Marks 71, and Gloria Vonarx 73 nett. In Division 2, Carol Martin’s 71 nett was too good for Roz Tilden, 73 nett on a c/b from Trish Gray, while Joan Veerhuis scored 69 nett for a c/b win from Sandra Mellen. NTP’s to Dee Harley,
Ros Tilden and Sandra Mellen. The girls returned for a stableford event on Friday, and in Division 1, Kitty Howe carded 37 for a c/b win from Simone Pilotto, while in Division 2, Lilian Sutherland played really well for 40 to get home from Val Brunskill 38. NTP to Gloria Vonarx.
Jim Briggs and Cloud Merrigan had cause for celebration last week, when they each won both the Wednesday and Saturday stroke events in A and B Grade respectively. In Wednesday’s comp, Jim scored 69 nett for success, from Clarrie Ridley 71 nett, while Cloud had the same score to claim the B Grade voucher, a point clear of Tom McDonnell. Shot of the Day, however, went to Peter Barnes who somehow made contact with his ball while in the process of ducking to avoid a swooping magpie next to the 18th green. He then looked up to see the ball end up a 20cm from the hole. NTP to Eddie Wall, Mick Laurent and Bruce Chalmers. Balls to 74 nett.
Saturday’s Monthly Medal saw Jim complete his double by scoring another 69 nett, a shot clear of Trevor Grahame and Josh Conlin, while the strong winds failed to blow Cloud away as he went six under his handicap for 66 nett for an easy win from Todd Gunning 72, and Paul McCullum 73 nett. Charlie Adams also played well to win the C Grade event with 69 nett on a c/b from Adrian Pollett, with Travis Hillier third with 70 nett. NTP to Peter Conlin, Roger Taylor and Warren Lynch. Ball Comp to 74 nett on a c/b.
Last week’s Sunday stableford went to Eddie Wall with 23, from Simone Pilotto, 22, and Tony Martin, 21. Ball comp to 19.
ORIENTEERING
WAGGAROOS Deb Davey has competed with distinction at the Australian Orienteering Championships held in South Australia recently. Deb finished with a third in each of the Sprint Distance and Long Distance events and fifth place in the Middle Distance event. The Sprint Distance was held in a Renmark School involving negotiating buildings, ovals and landscaped gardens and the Middle Distance held in a bushy area along the Murray River that included numerous steep erosion gullies and soft loose sand in places. The Long Distance event was held in the Adelaide Hills near Gumeracha in an area which included dense native forest with old gold mining areas, fast open pine forest, and semi-open to bushy areas with rock features which meant a continual change of navigation tactics.
On the local scene Ed McDougall and Alex Davey had good wins at the WaggaRoos orienteering event in the Murraguldrie State Forest last Sunday. All courses included a number of short legs in tricky rocky terrain that required accurate navigation as well as long legs across hillsides that required vigilance to avoid clambering between the boulders or fighting the blackberries. Alex Davey had a comfortable win on the 6km Hard course finishing some 17 minutes ahead of John Oliver. Both men navigated satisfactorily to most target features but found some parts of the forest very slow to traverse. Alex’s main mistake was towards the end of his run when he wandered offline to an adjacent parallel spur. John Oliver came second after a mistake mid-course when he misread some boulder features and ran well past the target rock.
Newcastle orienteers Peter and Maria Orr finished first and second on the 4.6km Hard course well ahead of WaggaRoos first runner, Wes Campbell. All three had some difficulties navigating and getting through the rough undercover in the early parts of the course. Ed McDougall made a rare appearance and showed he still has orienteering talent by being the only competitor to finish the 4.1km Moderate course. Other participants on this course lost direction attempting a riskier cross-country option rather than a hillier track option. Kath Oliver had a very narrow 2 second victory on the 2.6km Easy course just holding out Lachlan Grainger. Tom & Will Kerr were not far off the pace finishing in third just ahead of April Grainger.
Next local event is the first event in the Summer Orienteering Series at 6pm on Thursday, November 22 outside Harris Park in Bolger Avenue.
