But Patrick Tenison is as rare as some of the species he tends.
The Wagga builder said his green thumb provided a “certain relaxation” from the day-to-day grind.
He will be one of about 30 residents across the region, putting their prize plants on display at the Annual Spring Orchid Show this weekend.
For a small $5 entry fee, visitors have been invited to view close to 300 blooming flowers, purchase their own or check out a number of gardening demonstrations at the Glenfield Park Community Centre from 9am to 5pm Saturday and from 9am to 4pm on Sunday.
Mr Tenison – the Wagga Wagga Orchid Society vice-president – said what started as an interest had become a hobby. With more than 800 flowers in his two greenhouses, he said it was now a lifestyle.
“I used to have show pigeons, then I changed to motorbikes and now orchids,” Mr Tenison said. “It’s a good hobby.”
