Explorers Rifle Club
IT WAS 600 Yards at Lockhart last weekend with a wind that was ideal for shooting, other than a breeze from right running up to 3.5 minutes at times. Some had good scores while others paid the price for if not paying attention. This was the monthly prize shoot which after handicap calculation was won by Graham. Hubert Hassall had a good shoot with a borrowed rifle. Off gun Ben Goodwin was the clear winner. Thanks to Graham and David who did some more work relining the clubhouse with Gyprock.

Ulysses
WE HAD three members depart from Billy’s last week and they took the back road to Gundagai through Nangus. From Gundagai the next part of the day’s journey was up the Hume to Jugiong and then across to Harden and Wallendbeen. From Wallendbeen the ride took them to Cootamundra but they took a back way off the Olympic which bought them on to the Cootamundra/Jugiong road. The bakery at Cootamundra was blessed with their presence for lunch and having got that out of the way it was Home-James back to Wagga. Another good outing in good weather.
Saturday saw a good turn out for Meet & Greet and those there took the opportunity to farewell Jan and Allan Wells who moved down to Pambula on Monday. After many years in Wagga they have decided to retire down on the South Coast - good choice.
Fifteen Wagga members went to Morundah for the three branch get-together on Sunday and all up there were 39 for lunch from Wagga, Griffith and Albury/Wodonga. Our mob went out through Coolamon, Grong Grong and Narrandera. The meal at the Morundah Pub was, as usual, excellent and there was plenty of it.
Our next outing is a ride on August 19 which will leave McDonalds Edward Street at 9.30am and following on from there is the Tri Branch weekend at Yackandandah on August 31. If you intend going give Bill Allott a call on 0417 652 974. Our next branch meeting is on August 21 at the Radio Club Rooms in Small Street. Turn up at 7pm and the meeting will get under way at 7:30pm. Give our National Office a call on 1300 134 123 for any further information on the Ulysses Club.
ORIENTEERING
ALBURY secured a seven-point win over WaggaRoos in event 7 of the Interclub Orienteering Challenge last Sunday. Held in the Murraguldrie State Forest the harder navigation courses involved careful navigation across steep slopes looking for specific rock features among the rocky outcrops, while the easier navigation courses were constrained to the flatter more open areas looking for more distinct rock features. Apart from some blackberry patches along Nursery Creek the forest was very open and runnable with the greatest challenges being able to cope with the ascents and descents on the hills and the various changes in direction.
In the Interclub Challenge points are awarded to each competitor for participating and for successfully completing a course and bonus points awarded to the first three place getters on each course. Albury was represented by a strong contingent which dominated the Hard courses while WaggaRoos picked up most of its points on the Moderate and Easy courses. Michael Burt from the RedRoos club in ACT trumped the local participants by winning the 5.2km hard navigation course by a strong 7 minutes. Then followed a string a Albury orienteers before Phil Roy finished for WaggaRoos. Rob Simmons, Leigh Privett and Wayne Bajenoff gave Albury a solid 23:2 points start to the competition.
It was a similar story in the 4.4km hard navigation course with Albury’s Rick Armstrong, Norm McCann and Hugh Cameron finishing in the first three places and ahead of WaggaRoos Pauline Moore and Wes Campbell. At this point Albury had surged ahead 43:6.
However, there were no Albury participants in the easier navigation courses allowing WaggaRoos to pick up valuable points. Dale Clegg won the 4.3km Moderate course ahead of John Oliver and Carolyn and Oliver Hatherly and Rob McDougall had an excellent win on the 2.1km Easy course well ahead of the Farquhar and Mestan family groups. Nonetheless Albury won the day 43:34 although WaggaRoos still lead comfortably 324:271 after seven events. The final event in the Interclub Orienteering Challenge will be conducted on Sunday, August 26 on Nail Can Hill in Albury.
Results: 5.2km Hard: Michael Burt (RRA) 65.49; Rob Simmons (A) 72.49; Leigh Privett (A) 76.13; Wayne Bajenoff (A) 83.34; Phil Roy (W) 85.08; Ronice Goebel (A) 122.44. 4.4km Hard: Rick Armstrong (A) 58.49; Norm McCann (A) 76.49; Hugh Cameron (A) 92.56; Pauline Moore (W) 94.42;
Wes Campbell (W) 100.44; Bill Krautz & Vera McCluskey (A) 109.08. 4.3km Moderate: Dale Clegg (W) 59.01; John Oliver (W) 79.27; Carolyn & Oliver Hatherly (W) 92.53. 2.1km Easy: Rob McDougall (W) 27.11; Farquhar family (W) 58.21; Mestan family (W) 60.52.
