ULYSSES
Well, here we are again, raring to go like the mid-week warriors last week. They departed Billy’s at about 9.35am and took the route straight down the Sturt Highway to Wadi, the highway junction to Darlington Point and Jerilderie. From there, the next stop was Coleambally where they had lunch at the community club. After a very nice meal the next stage of the journey was across to Morundah, then Boree Creek, Kywong and back home to Wagga. It was a great day out, with fine weather and good company.
Saturday’s meet and greet was a dismal affair, with only eight braving the elements for coffee and a chat. As so many days of late have been pretty lousy, it does not inspire one to go out and socialise. But things will improve.
There was no official ride set down for Sunday and once again the day was not that great. Our next adventure is on August 5 – the annual trip across to the Morundah Hotel for lunch with Griffith and Albury-Wodonga. The publican there puts on a terrific spread and the cost usually runs out at about $35. If you are going to be a late starter, ring the hotel direct and tell them you are with the Ulysses group. The number to ring is 6959 7414; often there is no one around until about 11am.
The next ride is on August 9, leaving McDonald’s Edward Street car park at 9.30am, and on the 31st the tri-branch weekend starts at Yackandandah. The caravan park phone number at Yackandandah is 6027 1380. If you want to book a cabin, do it now before it is too late. Tell them you are with Ulysses.
This Saturday, we have a group booking at Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant in Kincaid Street. If you would like to go, give Lorraine a call on 0428 312 336 and she will see if she can get you in. Later in the year we will be holding our annual Christmas party in Tumut. More on that as time gets closer. Enjoy your ride and take care.
ORIENTEERING
WaggaRoo competed strongly at event 6 of the Interclub Orienteering Challenge against Albury last Sunday, but weight of numbers allowed Albury to win the day. Conducted near Gerogery on the slopes of the Yambla Range, courses avoided the steeper sections but still included tough hill climbs and descents through a forest littered with fallen branches and rocks. Finding a way through the cliff lines was as much of a challenge as finding the features in the terrain. The going was slow, navigation was challenging and the times recorded were generally slower than usual.
In the Interclub Challenge points are awarded for participating, for successfully completing the course and bonus points are awarded to the first three place getters in each course. The scoring system favours the club with the greater numbers and WaggaRoos were outnumbered 3:1. WaggaRoos had their best representation in the 4.0km Hard course and won that course 17:12. Albury’s Liz Wood won the course comfortably but then a string of WaggaRoos finished in succession to take the points.
WaggaRoos junior Jack Janetski led the charge finishing in a creditable second place despite a few navigational problems among the numerous rock ledges. When he was followed in by Angela Farrell, Wes Campbell and Bob Moore before the next Albury orienteer finished WaggaRoos had secured a 17:12 points win on that course. Albury inflicted the damage on the 5.1 km hard course, winning it 31:6. John Oliver was the sole WaggaRoos participant and despite losing a huge amount of time at the seventh control he still managed to finish in third place and earn some valuable points for WaggaRoos.
WaggaRoos held their own on the 2.5 km moderate course and 1.9km easy course, which had far fewer participants. Kath Oliver finished third on the moderate course and the Estan family won the Easy course to help WaggaRoos cause. Albury won the day 55:32 but WaggaRoos still lead 290:228 with 2 events to go. Event 7 in the Interclub Challenge will be held on Sunday, August 5 in the Murraguldrie State Forest. From Wagga Wagga, drive towards Tumbarumba. About 6km after passing over the Hume Highway turn right into Burngoogee Fire Track at the large Murraguldrie State Forest sign and follow the orienteering signs to the assembly area. Start from 10am. Results: 5.1km Hard Course: LeighPrivett (A) 81.51; Matt Flower (A) 103.50; John Oliver (W) 112.03; Rob Simmons (A) 112.04; Raf Freire (A) 114.25; Bill Krautz (A) 120.46; Tony McDiamid & Debbie (A) 125.59; John Neame (A) 135.15; Nick Creek (A) 157.39; Ben Appleford (A) 157.39. 4.0km Hard Course: Liz Wood (A) 58.04; Jack Janetski (W) 80.58; Angela Farrell (W) 85.12; Wes Campbell (W) 91.40; Bob Moore (W) 92.18; Norm McCann (A) 94.18; Pauline Moore (W) 108.07; Cathy McNabb (A) 135.05. 2.5km Moderate Course: Nick Mousley (A) 28.22; Emma Flower (A) 49.45; Kath Oliver (W) 68.25. 1.9km Easy Course: Julie, Eltan & Jarrah Mestan (W) 70.26.
