ULYSSES
It has been so cold over the last week or so that bikes have been stuttering, but that didn’t deter the Wednesday warriors who ventured out in the direction of Howlong by way of Rock and Tootal.
Tootal was as far as they got. The cold got to them so they back-tracked to Culcairn and had morning tea, lunch and a chat at the Culcairn Bakery before heading home to the warm fires burning, through Morven and Mangoplah.
On Saturday, the neat number 10 turned up at Billy’s for morning coffee and a pleasant hour or two was spent discussing the ways of the world and other vehicle drivers. Namely with big hats, dogs on the back and P platers. It didn’t prove anything, but the subject was aired and passed on to the local member.
Sunday was Crafty’s birthday and he has just made the number 80 his latest milestone, for which we wish him well. His family took him out to the club on Saturday night to celebrate and when I saw him at the swap meet the next day he looked surprisingly well.
At the swap meet, the Toy Run committee raffled a trailer load of firewood which was donated by Mark Kennedy. The biggest problem was the fact that three other groups were also raffling trailer loads of firewood, so the dividend wasn’t as good as it could have been. The winner of our raffle was Patrick Gullotta of Leeton.
Just had a note from head office regarding a restored scooter: Expression of interest sale. Members are invited to make an offer for the purchase of a Honda Forza motor scooter previously owned by Ulysses Club founding member Stephen Dearnley. The scooter was donated to the club by the Purvis family for the sole purpose of raising funds for the Ulysses Club Arthritis Research Fund. Bronwyn Purvis, Stephen’s granddaughter, was the last registered owner of the scooter. The Ulysses Club has mechanically restored the Honda Forza scooter and all proceeds will go directly to rheumatoid arthritis research. The scooter in question for sale has travelled a low 37,793km. Offers over $1950 will be considered. Closing date of sale Tuesday, July 31. Our next day out will be the trip to Morundah to meet up with Griffith and Albury/Wodonga for a beaut lunch at the pub there. The date is Sunday, August 5; we need to know numbers by next week so the publican will know how much beef and veg to get in. Contact Mary on 0413 586 196 and let her know if you will be going.
Don’t forget the tri-branch weekend at Yackandandah at the end of August. More about that in a week or two. For further information on the Ulysses Club, contact the national administration office on 1300 134 123.
ORIENTEERING
Joannah McDougall and John Oliver were the principal winners at the WaggaRoos orienteering event held on Willans Hill last Sunday.
Conducted using the score event format, participants had to find as many control sites as possible within a set time limit. Each site found earned points and points were deducted for exceeding it. Starting from near the Museum of the Riverina, most participants opted to tackle the group of control sites south of Lord Baden Powell Drive first. These controls were reasonably close to tracks and involved only a little climb. In contrast, the group of controls north of Baden Powell Drive were more off-track and required a couple of steep climbs over the main ridgeline. On the 45-minute course, John Oliver opted to visit the northern group first partly because the points value of the controls was higher and partly to undertake the ridge climbs while still reasonably fresh. This strategy worked well. He managed to take 16 of the 18 controls and with five minutes to spare had to decide whether to take the last two and risk exceeding the time limit or leave one out and finish on time. The obvious one to omit was worth 30 points and the deduction was 10 points for each minute (or part minute) the time limit was exceeded. He decided to take it but was 2:20 late back so lost all 30 points anyway. Nonetheless, his final score of 700 points was sufficient to win.
Stuart Young finished second with 670 points. He had run south first and although finishing within the allotted time limit had decided to omit two of the controls. Junior orienteers Jack and Tom Janetski excelled, finding 14 of the 18 controls and scoring a very good 580 points to finish third. On the 30-minute course, Joannah McDougall was another junior who excelled winning with an excellent score of 200 points. She took a couple in the southern group first before heading over the ridgeline to visit some of the higher valued controls. Next event will start at 10am at Table Top. From Gerogery, travel south, turn left immediately after crossing the railway line at Five Mates Bridge and follow the orienteering signs through the farm to the assembly area.
