Sorry, we missed out last week but I was away and my laptop decided to throw a wriggly.

However, here we are again with the news of the past and present in the dying throes of autumn.

Although there were only a handful of members in town last week  three did manage to fit a ride into Ardlethan and then Temora where they had lunch at the Terminus Hotel. After lunch Oscar led Mark and Fred back home in the mid-afternoon.

About 30 Wagga people went to the Ulysses Club AGM, leaving in small groups of three or four and going in many directions. The first lot left on Friday and Saturday, 4th and 5^th, and the rest sort of straggled on from there over the next few days. Some went via the Great Ocean Road, some up through Victoria and some across via the Sturt Highway. Don and I went via the Sturt Highway on Monday 7th and stopped off at Euston. What a magnificent club they have there. 

Next day we had breakfast in Mildura and finally arrived in Barmera at about 1pm, and after booking in, we settled into a week of fun in the sun. And along with about 2000 other happy campers that is what we did. The exhibition ground where we set up camp at Barmera was an excellent venue with good facilities. 

The towns quite close by had good catering and many of us went to these places, Berri, Renmark, Loxton and Barmera township and on Friday night we were invited to a dinner party at the Berri Hotel.  The problem was getting there and back after two glasses of red wine so we booked in for the night and had four glasses of red wine. The next morning we joined the street parade at Berri and ended up at Renmark for the day.

On Sunday morning we packed up camp and headed for Pinnaroo, then across to Ouyen, had a cuppa there and continued on to Manangatang and Piangil, a couple of kilometres from Tooleybuc.  Finally settling into Swan Hill for the night. Next day off we went again, stopping at Lake Boga to visit the Catalina Flying Boat Museum, complete with a completely restored WWII Catalina on display.  This museum is well worth a visit and is run by the local Lions Club. During the war, Lake Boga was secret maintenance base for flying boats. After the museum, visit we headed for Echuca where we had a bite to eat and then continued on to Cobram, Berrigan, Urana and Lockhart, arriving home at about 5.30pm.

It was a great week away and there are tales of many other adventures to be told.

Our branch meeting Tuesday of last week was really a non-event with only five in attendance so they all sat around gossiping, a talent most of our members have.

On Sunday a team of four went down through Mangoplah to Morven then Culcairn for morning tea.  From there they took a cross country tour through Walbundrie and Balldale to Rutherglen for lunch at the bakery which is a very popular spot. After lunch it was back up the Hume and then Olympic Way to Culcairn and from there home by 3pm. Les told me the day turned out to be quite nice but it was a bit chilly.

The next Sunday ride scheduled will be Sunday 3rd of June and please note that start time for June, July and August is now 9.30am. That applies to Wednesday rides as well. We could well do with some rain so take advantage of the dry days when you can.

Saturday saw six competitors for Black Powder.

Frank Cohn left everyone behind in a cloud of smoke, shooting a 246 to win. David Wheeler and Garry Moore fought hard for podium finishes with 227 and 226 respectively.

On Sunday, we held Centerfire 100yd/200yd Group with Paul Deehan shooting an aggregate group size of 0.269 of an inch over 5 targets to take the win. He was followed by Don Ewin (0.422) and Rob Cheetham (0.428). Rob managed to shoot an incredible 5 shot group measuring 0.133 of an inch at 100 yards on his first target which was by far the smallest group of the day. The Wednesday Junior Doubles Tennis Competition continues today at the Bolton Park Tennis Complex. Three weeks remain in this competition.

The competition is open to all players that are able to serve. To enter turn up at the courts before the start time of 4pm finish at 6pm sharp. Sportsman’s Warehouse Giftcards awarded at the end of the competition as well as a Best and Fairest award.

Leading the competition is Pat Wright on 46½ points with Alastair Wright on 41 points close behind Makenna Irlam on 40 ½ points then Riley Wilson on 31 points and Michael Ellis on 30 points making up the top five positions.

Last week’s winners of the McDonalds Sports Award were Michael Ellis and Makenna Irlam.

Only two Saturday’s remain in the junior tennis competitions at the Forest Hill courts.

The Masters’ competition is for players wanting more serious tournament play, with proper tie-breaker sets being played. There is prizemoney for the top twenty players in the competition for all players having played five matches, as well as a best and fairest award at the end of the competition. To take part, just turn up at the start time of 3pm until 5pm.    

Leading the Masters competition is Oliver Plum on 47 points with Caden Maxwell on 22 points close behind Robert Grantham on 17½ points then Pat Wright on 12½ points with Lachlan McDonald on 12 points making up the top 5 positions.

The junior tennis competition is open to all juniors wanting to play tennis in a friendly relaxed format, and is their first steps to playing competition.

All players should be able to serve to take part. There will be trophies to all players having played at least five matches. As well there is a special best and fairest award presented at the end of the competition. This competition starts at 3pm to 5pm.

Leading the junior tournament is Alastair Wright on 23 points close behind Tory Grantham on 22½ points then Yassin El Sanabary on 9½ points.

This week’s McDonalds Sports Award winner was Oliver Plum.

Our vets kicked off the week with their regular nine-hole stroke event last Monday.

It was Les Hodges’ turn to collect first prize with 35 nett, one clear of Bob Moore, Bob Hodge and Kerry Smith, followed by Tony Brunskill, John Mitchell, Mick Tilden and Bernie Mogden on 37.

Thursday’s event saw Dennis Adams score 33 nett to win on a c/b from Bob Hodge, both well clear of Tony Thompson and Dennis Stillman 36, Peter ‘The Whitton Wonder’ Briggs and Bert Adams 37, and Bill O’Rourke 38 nett on a c/b.

The ladies competed in their May Monthly Medal last Tuesday, with congratulations going to medal winners, Cheryl Jeffrey in Div 1, and Jan Leonard in Div 2, both with nett scores of 74.

The Div 1 scratch prize was collected by Monica Kember with 96, while the h/cap event was won by Lorraine Hickey with 78 nett. In Div 2, Gloria Vonarx scored 101 to win the scratch, while the best nett score went to Ros Tilden with 76 on a c/b.

June Rootes scored 106 off the stick to collect the Div 3 scratch voucher, with Pat Grieve scoring 75 nett to win the h/cap event. NTPs to Sue Matthews (Div 1), Sue Oakman (Div 2) and Vi Gardner (Div 3). Ball Comp to 79 nett c/b.

The girls returned for a Par Event on Friday, with Trish Gray playing one of her best ever rounds, defying the freezing conditions for a score of +5 to win Div 1, while Colleen Mavroudis also fired up for a solid +3 score to take care of Div 2. NTP to Pat Grieve. Ball Comp to -1.  

To Wednesday’s Members stroke event, and it didn’t take long for Clarrie Ridley to find his form after a bit of a layoff.

Clarrie scored 67 nett in heavy conditions to win A Grade, from Jim Briggs 69, and Andrew White 70 nett. In B Grade, Gary Chamberlain scored 71nett for a one-shot win from Les Ryan, with Trevor Garside a shot back on 73 nett for third spot. NTPs to Ben Wood, Clarrie Ridley and Max Horsnell. Ball Comp to 75 nett c/b.

Members returned for their Monthly Medal on Saturday, and in A Grade, John Dare was rewarded for his recent solid performances when he claimed the medal with 68 nett, from another consistent player, Andy White 70 nett on a c/b from Tony Merrigan.

John Hazell ran hot in B Grade for a score of 68 nett, to get home from Geoff Nicholls 70, and Phil Harrison 71 nett.

In C Grade, Max Oakman scored 71 nett for a win, from Kevin Rafter 72, and Peter Fulmer 73 nett. NTPs to Dave Billingham, John Parker and Ray Bell. Ball Comp to 76 nett on a c/b.

The Business Girls also played a stroke event on Saturday, with Pam Kellam scoring 71 nett to win on a c/b from Janelle Doust, while Lazetta Gaffney all but knocked the pin out on the 18th to collect yet another NTP voucher.

Finally, Sunday’s nine-hole stableford comp went to Tim Carberry with 20 pts on a c/b from Eddie Wall, also on a c/b.
