Jerilderie is famous for being the only town in NSW to have been raided by Ned Kelly, and the town still brims with historic charm.
On the June long weekend, Jerilderie plays host to Australia’s national Open Thermal Soaring Competition. Watch as hundreds of competitors from around Australia and the world launch their radio-controlled model gliders into the sky.
No visit is complete without a stop at Jerilderie Bakery for one of its famous pies. The bakery’s external facing wall was recently painted by four local artists as part of an Indigenous art project and now features a beautiful eagle, a totem for the town.
Coleambally, or “Coly” as the locals call it, has the honour of being one of Australia’s newest towns and this June long weekend will celebrate its 50th birthday with four days of fun activities and reunions for residents past and present, visitors, families and friends.
Celebrations will include vintage machinery displays, fashion parades, fireworks, a bush dance on Saturday night, food stalls, AFL and netball games, the Coleambally Gift running race and even a billy cart derby. Coly is also home to Yarrow Park olive grove and vineyard, which hosts wine, olive and extra virgin olive oil tastings every weekend and by appointment during the week.
At Darlington Point, you’ll find a small-town bursting with country hospitality. Check out the new Hygge Living & More, a cafe and homewares shop run by Kylie Place who also owns the Airbnb-listed Hawkesbury Park Country Cottage.
RivaDestra Pizza & Pasta is a Point institution and has been dishing up delicious Italian fare for 10 years. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday for pizzas, with a full Italian menu on Friday and Saturday nights. Don’t forget nearby Altina Wildlife Park, a zoo-fari experience where visitors get up close with lions, zebras, rhinos and more.
