Ulysses
IT WAS looking like being a pretty warm day last Wednesday so the crew of seven who headed out were spot on with their prediction and only opted for a short run - because it was hot. They ran down the Sturt Highway past Borambola then down Mates Gully Road to Tarcutta. From Tarcutta the next stretch was through Humula and Carabost up to Rosewood where they all settled into a nice lunch at Gone Barny Nursery and Eucalyptus Café and shop. After lunch the trip back to Wagga was down the Tumbarumba Road to Kyeamba and Gregadoo, managing to get home before the tarmac melted. In spite of the heat it was a pleasant run.Seventeen fronted up at Billy’s for Meet and Greet on Saturday morning with Barry still hobbling along on his broken leg and Di putting on a brave face with her moon Boot back home in the garage or somewhere. Much of the discussion was about who is going to South Australia in May, who they are going with, what route they are taking, where they are staying on the way there and back and how many tickets they plan to collect on the journey and who cares.
Sunday saw three gather at Maccas for the ride out west, Pat, Les and Steve. The day didn’t look very promising to start with but by the time we got to Narrandera things were looking good. I know when I arose on Sunday morning and looked at the skies there was not a cloud to be seen - it was all cloud – and cold.
We went to Narrandera through Coolamon, Ganmain and Grong Grong and stopped at Narrandera for a 10 minute look-about. Next stop was Leeton for a Coffee and after that was disposed of we took the Whitton Road to Whitton and Darlington Point, Stopping at Wadi for a top up of fuel. By this time it was about 12.20pm and we headed down the Kidman Way to Coleambally where we had a meal at the Community Club. The journey home was further down Kidman Way, turning off to Morundah, heading down Urana Road, turning off to Boree Creek, up to Lockhart and back through Collingullie, home by 3.45pm. Apart from a small gale at Boree Creek, for about 15 minutes, the weather was most kind to us and we all enjoyed a great day out in the saddle.
Our branch meeting and local AGM was held last night but this will have gone to press before all the news erupted from the floor so will give you an update next week. The next scheduled ride is put down for Sunday, May 6 but a good percentage will have headed off to Barema, SA, but if you are not going and feel like a district ride be at McDonalds car park, in Edward Street at about 8.30am and join anyone else who may be in the same boat.
Explorers Rifle Club
A SMALL but dedicated group turned up on Saturday at Lockhart despite the very windy conditions. Before shooting we were eagerly awaiting results from the Commonwealth Games to see how our fellow shooters were going in the Fullbore Target Rifle final (Day 3) on the 900 and 1000 yard range.
Despite putting up a valiant effort Jim Bailey from Sydney was caught in the last couple of shots after leading for three days and was relegated to the silver medal position with the English Pair of David Luckman and Pareq Patel taking the gold and bronze medals. Country NSW shooter (and world champion) Ben Emms ran into a bad patch but finished ninth out of the 33 shooters competing. Over a great result for two fine marksman who gave it their best effort.
We are all extremely proud of these two men and were kept up to date with their changes in fortune by Scott Brindley and his family who were on hand to cheer them on.
A more difficult task however was at the Lockhart range with wind increasing intensity all day and true to the weather report reached its peak around 5pm thankfully we had just finished and were able to save our target that looked like it was about to be torn off its mountings despite being attached to two very solid 90mm posts.
Fortunes varied on the day with wind gusts enough to change the point of impact of the bullet almost a metre from the central bullseye. Given that the actual central bullseye at 600 yards is only 145mm it is easy to see why some went home with their tail between their legs after a real beat up on the range. Next weekend is a practice shoot.
- Results: F Class John Goodwin-FO-161.1, Ben Goodwin-FO-160.2, Graham Crowe-FS-143.3, Hubert Hassall-FS-124.1, Paul Golden-FS-118.1(Out of 180). Match Rifle Phil Bain – 142.6 (Out of 150).
WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
TIM Barlow thought he was going to be the only star shining at the club last week. After all, he’d just collected over $100 from his mates when he picked up five birdies in his three-under round of 69 to win last Wednesday’s A Grade stableford event with 42 points. But come Saturday’s 4-Ball Multiplier event, and up pops Mick Landrigan. Mick played a perfect draw with his three-rescue club on the long and tricky par three 9th hole. Despite the flag being set in its most difficult position at the back of the green, his ball landed on the front of the green and rolled gently into the hole … for a 1 a 5! Sorry Barney, but your chip-in on the 14th on Saturday doesn’t even rate. Consistent golfers, Roman Adamcewicz and Kyle Harrison, fought it out for second spot behind Tim in Wednesday’s round, with Roman winning on a c/b with 38 points.
Craig Keith also scored 42 points to win B Grade, from Geoff Hanns 40 points on a c/b from Bruce Yeatman, while the NTP’s went to Bob McKenzie, Riley Portors and John Burkinshaw. Ball comp to 36 points c/b.
Max Horsnell and Maurie Hogan took out Saturday’s 4-Ball Multiplier with 80 pts, from Mick Landrigan and Grahame Winson 74, and Eddie Wall and Warren Lynch 72 points.Individual honours went to David Billingham 43, Mick Landrigan 40 and Doug Emery, also 40 points, while the other NTP’s went to Peter Conlin on the 13th, and Mick Laurent on the 18th. Teams ball comp to 58 points c/b.
In Vets news, last Monday saw them compete in a 4BBB, which went to the team of Don Thorne and Don Kirwan with 24 points, on a c/b from Dave Sutton and John Mitchell, followed by Les Hodges and Ron Culgan. In Thursday’s stroke event, Roy Sanders carded 33 nett for a one-shot win from John Burkinshaw and John Hazell, followed by Eddie Wall 35, and Don Kirwan, Grahame Winson and Peter Kirkman, each with 36 nett.
The ladies played for their April Monthly Medal last Tuesday, with the medals going to Marg Hogan in Div 1 with a terrific 67 nett, and Pam Seymour in Div 2 with 72 nett. Jenny Hazell collected Div 1 scratch with 98, while the nett event went to Lyn Donohoe, 77. Lorraine Hickey with 98 won the Div 2 scratch, while Billie Johnstone claimed handicap honours with 72 nett. In Div 3, Colleen Mavroudis putted well for 107 and a win in the scratch event, with Barb O’Donnell taking out the nett with a score of 74. NTP’s to Jan Longmore, Billie Johnstone and Lorraine McGowan. Putting comp winners, Kerrie Celegon, Jenny Myers and Colleen Mavroudis. Ball comp to 82 nett on a c/b. The girls returned for a Moneyball Stableford event on Friday, which was won by the team of June Byrnes, Gloria Vonarx and Simone Pilotto with 35 points. Ball comp to 30 points.
Finally, the Business Girls returned to the fray on Saturday when they competed for the Golf NSW Medal. Well done to winner, Doreen Hazell with 75 nett, and runner-up, Maureen Foley 77 nett. NTP, Maureen Foley.
