ORIENTEERING
WAGGAROOS won the first event of the Interclub Orienteering Challenge against Albury with a convincing 56 points to 19.
The event was conducted in the Livingstone National Park and State Conservation Area near Burrandana last Sunday.
Wes Campbell set courses that challenged participants mentally and physically.
Route choices were generally between going straight and battling the scrub to avoid the steeper climbs or running wider to tracks and accept the climb to avoid the scrub.
The pits left from early mining days provided good navigational check points along the way.
In the Interclub Challenge points are awarded for participation and placings.
WaggaRoos win was set up when John Oliver and Stuart Young took the quinella on the 5.9km Hard navigation course ahead of Albury’s Matt Flower.
John had a steady run and was always in the lead. Stuart lost some time when he ran past the first control which allowed Matt to assume second place.
When Matt seriously missed the second and fourth controls Stuart was able to move into second place and retained it for the rest of the course.
When WaggaRoos Phil Roy and Lauren Edmanson finished ahead of Albury’s Wayne Bajenoff WaggaRoos had a strong 18:8 lead.
Briohny Seaman, Alex Davey and Deb Davey then consolidated WaggaRoos position with a trifecta on the 3.5km Hard navigational course.
The trio finished almost 14 minutes ahead of Albury’s first finisher on that course.
Briohny had an excellent run with no major errors.
Alex lost significant time at the second control which should have been a straight forward up and over a ridge into a small gully.
However he drifted significantly and ended up in the wrong gully system.
Despite being well behind most other participants at that point a series of good legs helped him claw his way to second place.
Albury’s Rick Armstrong was always in contention but a couple of navigational errors towards the end of the course along some very rocky slopes saw him slip from second to fourth place.
When Albury’s Bill Krautz finished fifth and WaggaRoos had a handy 36:13 lead.
Albury did have some success when Alex Sutherland and Josh Roy won the 3.0km Moderate navigation course quite comfortably from WaggaRoos Bowen-Wilson family group despite having considerable trouble finding the second last control.
While this gave Albury some valuable points from the Moderate course WaggaRoos were able to score freely in the 1.2km Easy navigation course which had no Albury participants.
The Judd family had fastest time finishing just 22 seconds ahead of Oliver & Carolyn Hatherly with Ryder Seaman in third place
This gave WaggaRoos a resounding 56:19 points win.
Event 2 in the Interclub Challenge will be held near Chiltern on Sunday, April 29 and there is no doubt Albury will be out in force to redress this loss.

WHAT brilliant weather we are experiencing at the moment, just perfect for riding bikes. And so last week seven fearless warriors mounted their steeds and headed for Talbingo.
There were two Spyders and five bikes all told and the mix was Les, Oscar, Mark, Gerhard, Woody, Gurt and Fred.
The track up there was through Oura, Wantabadgery, Tumbalong and Adelong, where they watered the horses, then continued on to Tumut and finally Talbingo for lunch.
They were all sitting out in the sun chomping into their respective feeds and Woody rocks up and says “Where did you get the tucker?”
“In the shop there,” says one of the more intelligent members.
“I have just been in there and asked the bloke ‘what have you got for dinner?’ and he said he doesn’t do dinner, I would have to go to the club.”
With that the chef comes out with an order for someone and Woody says, “I thought you said you didn’t have any grub?”
Cheffy says, “Mate you asked for dinner, this is lunch. Now what would you like?
Woody orders some fish and chips, which I believe came straight out of the Jounama Dam. So having got sorted they all had a very pleasant meal and after all the chit chat headed for home straight down to the Hume Highway and then the Sturt Highway back to home base.
Sixteen rocked up to Billy’s for Meet and Greet on Saturday and we had two casualties on deck; Barry with his broken leg which he collected in Junee as part of the Black Dog Ride and Di Middleton who was hobbling around with a moon boot on her broken leg which she got when she went base over apex on someone’s front verandah. Neither fracture was the result of a motorbike accident. “Barry was stationary” and Di was stationary after she had completed her loop-the-loop.
Last Sunday was not a club ride day but there was a lot of riders out enjoying the sunshine on their machines.
This Sunday we will be leaving McDonald’s Edward Street car park at 9am and heading to Narrandera the Grong Grong way then to Yanco and peeling off there to Darlington Point and finally landing in Coleambally for lunch. Homeward journey will be through Morundah and Boree Creek. It will be a fairly lengthy ride so pack some water.
Our next branch meeting which is also our local AGM will start at 6.30pm with a sausage sizzle etc and the meetings will get under way at 7.30pm. Remember that only financial members are able to vote at our AGM.
The next event on the calendar is the club AGM down in the Riverland district of South Australia which starts on May 7. So there won’t be much happening locally in the first two or three weeks of May but we will keep you posted with what’s on.
