With Wagga City Council transitioning to a new waste collection system, residents were asked to put their old bins on their sides out on the kerb. Bourkelands woman Simonne Walle said when she saw people putting their bins out in different positions, she was inspired to create the “Bin Sculptures of Wagga” Facebook page, which drew more than 1000 “likes” in just a few days.
“I’ve got a quirky sense of humour and I was walking around and noticed everyone had put them out in different positions, so I took photos thought I’d make the Facebook group,” Ms Walle said.
“Council is known for its art and (the changes) are affecting everybody and we’re all suffering through it, but this shows off how creative Wagga is.”
According to council, the old bins would be collected before April 20, but not everyone was content to leave their bins out until then. Ms Walle said her partner loved his lawn too much to let it die under the bins and took them straight out to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre himself.
“It’s having consequences on people’s lawns,” Ms Walle said. “Someone suggested making a wall of them around the council chambers but this thing isn’t supposed to be malicious towards council – I actually think the new system is a good thing – but as long and people aren’t hurting themselves or leaving the bins in precarious positions it’s a bit of fun.”
