HAVE you noticed how lots of the Riverina’s biggest and brightest events happen in our smaller towns?

Well, the weekend of  March 9 to 11 is no exception with Leeton playing host to the huge Bidgee Classic Fishing Competition and Tumut getting its rock on at Rock the Turf 2018.

The Leeton Bidgee Classic is a three-day catch and release fishing competition held along a 15 kilometre stretch of the Murrumbidgee River.

A family event, this year the Bidgee Classic has $40,000 worth of prizes on offer for senior, junior (eight to 18 years) and sub junior (seven years and under) fishers.

You could even win a boat!

Stay close to the action with camping and cabins available at Gogeldrie Weir Park or in Leeton.

As well as fishing there’s live entertainment, activities for the kids, raffles and more.

For something other than fishing take a quick trip to Leeton’s Fivebough Wetlands, a huge 350 hectares of internationally recognised and protected wetlands with five kilometres of walkways that make it the perfect spot for bird and wildlife spotting.

MEANWHILE in Tumut, on Saturday, March 10, Rock the Turf has a full lineup of music from Australian artists for this unique outdoor concert at the Tumut Racecourse.

Celebrating its fifth year and set alongside the beautiful Tumut River, Rock the Turf is a great day out for the whole family.

Bring your crew, pack some chairs and kick back to enjoy the music, the food and the drinks.

There’s even amusements to keep the kids happy.

Now really is the perfect time to head to the Snowy Valleys to escape the heat, with mountain biking, water sports, hiking, fishing and horse riding just some of the activities on offer.

While you’re up in the high country don’t forget to check out the fruit orchards and roadside produce stalls at Batlow, the wineries at Tumbarumba and the Tumut River Brewing Co.

Or for something special, see if you can secure a room or cottage at nearby Nimbo Fork Lodge.
