ORIENTEERING
IZZY Hutchinson and Chontelle Dailey had a narrow win in WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series Event 8 held at Lake Albert last Thursday. Starting from Apex Park participants had a choice of 30 or 45 minutes to find as many answers to questions about the area as possible. Correct answers earned points and points were deducted for exceeding the time limit. Julie Gooding set some good challenges for participants with 34 questions worth a total of 270 points. Participants had to continually consider which direction to head next to obtain a better score. In some cases the lure of higher points in one direction led to some retracing of steps or a long run to get back to another group of questions. Participants on the 45 minute course generally over estimated their ability and exceeded their allotted time limit which became important because the competition was close. John Oliver went east into and around Rawlings Park before heading north through the streets in a roughly anticlockwise direction. Although he picked up an excellent 150 points he found the run back into the wind difficult and lost 10 points by finishing 1:33 overtime.
In contrast Izzy and Chontelle headed north in a roughly clockwise direction around the streets taking some of the higher valued questions. A little time was lost at one place where the clues in the question did not seem to match the evidence on the ground but the pair managed to score an excellent 140 points and finish with just over minute to spare. Although having the same final score as john, Izzy and Chontelle were declared the winners by virtue of having the faster time. Sean Sunley also went east into Rawlings Park and finished third just off the pace with a very good 135 points after losing 10 points for exceeding his time limit. Competition in the 30 minute course was also close. Pauline Moore did best finishing with 33 seconds to spare and amassing a very good 90 points. Wes Campbell finished second with 75 points. Bob Moore gathered more points than the others (95) but was almost 4 minutes overtime so finished with a score of 75 and was relegated to third place.
The penultimate event in the WaggaRoos Summer Orienteering Series starts at 6pm Thursday evening from 46 Brindabella Drive, Tatton. SSAA Wagga
SEVEN shooters took to the range on Saturday with Black Powder Rifles, proving that old guns can be just as much fun (if not more) than new ones. Mark Wheeler shot a respectable 249 to win, followed by Garry Moore 218 and Simon Jonas 201. Sunday was our first Benchrest shoot for the year and the turnout was huge! 19 Shooters shot 100y Centerfire for group and at the end Paul Deane stood victorious with an incredible average group size of of 0.279 inches at 100 yards. Don Ewin came second with .351 and Rob Cheetham scored .401 for 3rd. In Factory class Ryan Mitchell shot a .542, followed by Arthur Robinson and Gavin Power on .696 and .719 respectively. In Thursday’s comp, Tony Martin played a few shots better than he did on Monday for a score of 31 nett and a good win, from Keith Withers 33, Ken Batt 34, Gordon Brennan, Bernie Mogford, Fred Simmons and Don Kirwan 35, and Dennis Stillman 36, on a c/b from Phil Powell and Bob Hodge.
The ladies Summer Cup continued last Tuesday with a nine-hole stableford event, and in Division 1, Jenny Hazell ran hot for 23 pts for a solid win, from Lorraine Hickey 21, and Lyn Donohoe 19 pts. Barbara O’Donnell won Division 2 with a great round of 22 pts, from Sue Oakman 20, and Jan Leonard 19 pts on a c/b. NTP to Marg Hogan. Ball comp to 18 pts. The girls returned for a stroke event on Friday, and in Division 1, Dee Harley played well under her handicap for 33 nett and a win, from Cassie Gill 35 nett on a c/b from Anne Leonard, also on a c/b. Marg Bradley took out Division 2 with 34 nett, from Glad Leitch 37 nett, on a c/b from Janine Fitzgerald, also on a c/b. NTP to Anne Leonard. Ball comp to 37nett.
Last Wednesday’s mens’ stroke event saw Col Smith clean up in A Grade with 41 nett, from John Burkinshaw 38 nett on a c/b from Peter Conlin, while in B Grade, John McLeod took advantage of a stunning eagle 2 on the par four 7th hole to rack up 43 pts, for an easy win from playing partner, Bruce ‘Sheriff’ Yeatman 38 pts, on a c/b from Peter Friedlieb. NTP’s to Ray Gladman, John Burkinshaw and John Dare. Ball comp to 34 pts on a c/b.
Members played their February Monthly Medal stroke event on Saturday. In A Grade, the consistent Bob Alexander did it again with a score of 67 nett for a good win from Max Horsnell 70, and Peter Conlin 71 nett. John Parker made the most of a tip from Club Pro, Tim Barlow, to shoot seven under his handicap for 65 nett, for a win in B Grade, well clear of Keith Bevan 68, and Steve Purcell 70 nett on a c/b. In C Grade, Travis Hillier scored 67 nett to get home from Max Oakman 68 nett, and another of Tim’s students, Ray Barnett, 70 nett, on a c/b. NTP’s to Ron Flannigan, Peter Treharne and John Parker. Ball comp to 74 nett on a c/b. Tim’s nine-hole Sunday Comp results: Kade McDonald 28 pts, Phil Harrison 21 pts. Ball comp to 19 pts.
ULYSSES
THERE was five in the pack last week, Mark, Les, Oscar, Pat and Ian. While draining the last dregs of coffee a passer-by noted a big pool of petrol under my R100S and I just passed it off as having filled the tank too full. So at 9.11am we all headed up to Gundagai and stopped at a set of traffic lights where the council were doing roadworks at the old bridge on the southern end of town. There was a strong smell of petrol from my machine and looking down it was dribbling out from somewhere. We kept going up to Brungle and then across to Coolac where I stopped to survey the damage, and there it was, a split in one of the fuel lines. Luckily it was a quick fix and we were on our way again landing in Jugiong for brunch. I filled the tank at Jugiong and discovered that I had used 16.5 litres of 98 octane to get there (157Ks) so I lost a bit. It would have been interesting to see some clown throw a cigarette butt out the window following behind. After brunch we continued on to Harden then Wallendbeen and Cootamundra. And finally stopped at the Old School House Café in Bethungra for a cold drink and a chat with Gary and Sharleen and after an hour of rest it was back to Wagga. At around 1pm the wind came up and made navigation pretty challenging, I believe the wind was in the order of about 60 knots but we made it without ending up in Farmer Fred’s paddock.
Saturday morning Meet and Greet at Billy’s was well attended with the usual light-hearted banter. Most of the people there indicated that they had registered for the AGM but in case you haven’t, the cut off date for ordering merchandise has been extended to the 23rd.
Only three took advantage of the Sunday ride, being Les, Steve and Ian, and they all took the river road then up to Ganmain and back to Cooloamon for a snack and drink at the cheese factory shop in Cowabbie Street. After satisfying their needs there the next stop was Junee after travelling through Marrah and Old Junee. The day was starting to heat up so after lunch it was straight back home through Harefield and Bomen. A nice short ride of about 200ks.
I must apologise regarding our branch meeting which I had said it was last Tuesday. Well it wasn’t. It was last night, so to all of you who got in a fluster I beg forgiveness. Anyway you should all know by now that the branch meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of each month. Apart from the Wednesday rides which are growing in popularity our Sunday rides are on the first and third Sundays of each month, so the next is March 4 from McDonalds in Edward Street at 9am.
Tennis
THE Wednesday Junior Doubles Tennis Competition continues today at the Bolton Park Tennis Complex. The competition is open to all players that are able to serve. To enter turn up at the courts before the start time of 4pm finish at 6pm sharp. Sportmans Warehouse Giftcards awarded at the end of the competition as well as a Best and Fairest award. Leading the competition are Makenna Irlam and Lachlan McDonald tied on 8 points close behind Riley Wilson on 7 ½ points with Pat Wright on 3 ½ points then Kelsey Atkinson on 3 point making up the top five positions. Last week’s winners of the McDonalds Sports Award were Kelsey Atkinson and Mohamed Ghazy. Excellent tennis played last Saturday in the junior tennis competitions at Forest Hill courts. The masters competition is for players wanting more serious tournament play, with proper tie-breaker sets being played. There is prizemoney for the top twenty players in the competition for all players having played five matches, as well as a best and fairest award at the end of the competition. To take part, just turn up at the start time of 3pm until 5pm.
Leading the masters competition is Oliver Plum on 8 points, then Lachlan McDonald on 5 points close behind Pat Wright and Robert Grantham tied on 3 points with Caden Maxwell and Riley Wilson tied on 2 points making up the top 5 positions. The junior tennis competition is open to all juniors wanting to play tennis in a friendly relaxed format, and is their first steps to playing competition. This competition starts at 3pm to 5pm. Leading the junior tournament is Yassin El Sanabary on 3 with Tory Grantham on 2. This week’s McDonalds Sports Award winners were Masters Robert Grantham and Junior Tournament winner Yassin El Sanabary.
