Junee man John Foord was inspired to bring OzHarvest to the Wagga region in 2012 after hearing about citrus fruit being ploughed into the ground by growers unable to find markets.
He had previously been told about OzHarvest by a friend and was intending to get involved, but it was hearing about the wasted oranges that spurred him into action.
OzHarvest now collects surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants and makes sure it gets to people who need it, via charity groups like St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army, in Wagga and in Junee.
From perishables like bread, fruit and vegetables and even milk to individually frozen surplus restaurant meals, Mr Foord said more Wagga businesses were lending a hand.
Mr Foord said shops could also pass on clothing items, like a package of socks that had perhaps been tampered with, and could no longer be sold but were still useable.
OzHarvest Wagga has a team of about 20 volunteers who can collect the food and pass it on to charities.
“We’re always happy to have more volunteers and to get more businesses donating,” he said.
“It’s good to see the support we are getting.”
