Starting this week, the Roads and Maritime Service is expected to spend seven weeks tearing up a section of Edward Street in front of the new Amart Furniture store to allow for new driveways and turning lanes. One lane will remain open in each direction, but the speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h during the works.
Work will take place from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm and with night work starting in mid-February from Monday to Sunday between 6pm and 6am, weather permitting.
Wagga City Council is also about to begin a $1.5 million road resealing project, which will take about three months to complete. More than 270,000m2 of sealed roads were scheduled to be be resurfaced by Boral, which started in Lake Albert on Monday.
According to council, residents and businesses would be notified of dates and changed traffic conditions via a letterbox drop prior to works starting in their street.
Council supervisor Lee Shoemark said the works were needed to keep roads up to scratch.
“Resealing involves applying a new coat of bitumen and stone aggregate over the existing surface which helps keep moisture out of the road base and increases friction for car tyres,” Mr Shoemark said.
“Without preventative maintenance like resealing, the life of the road is greatly reduced and it’s more likely to produce potholes and other defects.”
In preparation for the reseal, council crews had already carried out maintenance works on some roads.
Motorists were advised that changed traffic conditions would be experienced during the program.
“We ask motorists to take care while the works are taking place and there may be some minor traffic delays due to the partial lane closures,” Mr Shoemark said.
“There will also be some loose stones following the works as the aggregate needs two to three weeks to lock into place after a reseal.
“A street sweeper will return to the reseal sites after this period to remove any remaining loose stone.”
The roads reseal program will focus on roads across 12 suburbs and some rural areas during the next three months.
