Starting from Manneke Park, Estella, the race was restricted to a 30-minute time limit because of the high temperature. Using their map participants had to find the answers to questions about the area within that time limit.
Questions included identifying what it was that Mr Manneke made, the type of material used to make specific letterboxes, and particular ornaments in front gardens. Each correct answer scored points and points were deducted for exceeding the time limit.
Wes Campbell set some interesting navigation challenges that made participants think hard about their route choices. Most participants headed north attracted by some high value questions in that direction and were then confronted with decisions about which control sites not to visit as much as which one to take next.
Stuart Young clearly made some tactically smart decisions. Participating in his first event with the WaggaRoos, he set a hot pace in the warm conditions collecting an impressive 230 points.
Alex Davey finished second with an excellent 195 points just holding off Izzy Hutchinson and Chantelle Dailey (185) and John Oliver (180).
Peter Orr from the Newcastle Orienteers scored a good 150 to finish just ahead of junior orienteers Jack and Tom Janetzki who were also competing in their first summer series event and tied for 6th place.
The summer series will resume on Thursday, January 25 starting at 6pm from Jannali Pl, Glenfield Park.
Results: 30 Minute Course: Stuart Young 230 points; Alex Davey 195; Izzy Hutchinson & Chantelle Dailey 185; John Oliver 180; Peter Orr (Newcastle)150; Jack Janetzki 140; Tom Janetzki 140.

Ulysses
LAST week we had three of our regular team plus Mark Williams joining them for a ride he hasn’t been on for a long time.
Mark was always a regular on Sunday rides way back then and has recently retired so he can enjoy the scene once again.
Smithy, Oscar, Fred and Mark took the road to Wantabadgery and then travelled on to Adelong where they took advantage of the amenities before carrying on to Tumut and Talbingo.
After a spot of lunch at Talbingo three headed straight back to Wagga while, Mark peeled off to Tarcutta. All arriving back in Wagga early, beating the afternoon heat. A nice short ride taking advantage of the morning coolness.
Sadly we have to report that Alan Tye passed away a few days ago after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a regular on the Wednesday rides and will be sorely missed. His funeral is tomorrow (December 21).
Saturday Meet and Greet was underrepresented this week with the majority taking the opportunity to get some Christmas shopping out of the way. Those who did attend came on down to Bike Essentials where the Toy Run Committee concluded their Toy Run business which got washed out on the 6th.
Joe Wilkes conducted an auction where all of the furniture donated by the Junee Jail was disposed of, and I must say there were some great bargains. All the wooden toys got sold and the Toy Run raffles were drawn.
The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul conducted a sausage sizzle during the morning but numbers were down so no one made a fortune. I guess the event wasn’t advertised enough or maybe the silly season had people doing other things, however all was not lost, at the end of the day we had handed over nearly $20,000 worth of toys to the Sally’s and Vinnie’s for distribution at Christmas time.
On Sunday six of us enjoyed a ride North to Young and went up the Olympic Way to Wallacetown where we took a right turn to Harefield and then on to Junee and Bethungra.
We stopped off at Bethungra and had some refreshments at the Old School House with Garry and Gaylene. Some of the Cootamundra mob were there but they left soon after we arrived, makes you wonder doesn’t it?
From Bethungra we then rode up to Young where we had a nice lunch at Wilders. Max was with us after a long spell, ( remember Max of hairdressing fame) and he was hell bent on purchasing some cherries. Which he did.
So Ian, Smithy, Max, Sue, Steve and myself carried on to Stockinbingal and Temora where topped the tanks, and from Temora it was home James by 3pm and 333K on the clock. It was a pleasant ride but was getting a bit warm as the afternoon wore on.
The next event on the calendar will be the breakfast ride from the Grauer’s residence in Ladysmith starting at 7am (I think, maybe it’s 7.30am) and heading to the hills after some sustenance.
This ride will take place on January 21 and we will keep you posted.
Ulysses members should start thinking about the 2018 AGM which will be held at the Riverland Field Day site which is central to Waikerie, Loxton, Berri, Barmera and Renmark in South Australia. Application forms are available on the Ulysses web site or in the summer issue of Riding On which will be out shortly.
The dates for the 2018 event are from May 7 to 13 and I reckon it will be an event to behold.
Merry Christmas everyone and may your New Year be prosperous.
WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
GARRY Forde made it consecutive wins when he held off Jim Briggs on a c/b, with 33 nett, to win last Monday’s Vets comp, followed home by Peter Briggs, Bill O’Rourke, Tony Thompson and Bob Alexander on 35 nett.
Ken Morden cleaned up in Thursday’s comp with a good round of 32 nett, three clear of Bernie Mogford and Bob Hodge on 35, and Don Thorne, Tony Pollard and Terry McInerney, with 36 nett.
Last Tuesday’s ladies nine-hole stroke comp, and in Division 1, Jenny Hazell scored under her handicap with a 34 nett, to win from Anne Leonard 35, and Jan Marks 36 nett. Jan Leonard took care of Division 2 with 35 nett, followed by Colleen Mavroudis 38, and Lorraine McGowan 39 nett on a c/b. Ball comp to 39 nett on a c/b.
Peter Barnes’ golf game has come to life recently, some suggesting that it’s because his old mate, Grahame Winson, who’s off getting a new knee put in, isn’t around to put him off his game.
In any case, Barney made it a couple of wins on the trot when he took out last Wednesday’s members’ stableford comp with a solid 39 pointspoints, to win the A Grade event from Matt McMullen 37, and Bob Alexander 36 points. In B Grade, another in-form golfer, Alan French, fired up for 40 points to win from Richard Pepper 39 points, on a c/b from Dylan Norris. NTP’s to Andrew White, John McLeod and Roger Taylor. Ball comp to 34 points.
The highlight of the day, however, was when in an effort to beat the heat, Noel Murray showed he wasn’t just an ex-rugby league player who can play golf, when he stripped off and swam a couple of laps of the dam adjacent to the 14th fairway, a feat he apparently repeated in Saturday’s round. Barney reckons the sight of old Pops Kember patting Noel down with his golf towel is something he’ll try hard to forget, as quickly as possible.
Talking about Saturday’s round, it was the December Monthly Medal stroke event, and in A Grade, Max Horsnell had a great round of golf with 65 nett, for a win from Phil Powell 69 nett. Mick de Vries also played well for 68 nett and success in B Grade, followed by Zac Billingham 70 nett on a c/b. Maurie Hogan equaled the best round of the day to win C Grade with 65 nett, with Max Oakman runner-up on 70 nett. NTP’s to Peter Austin, Roger Taylor and Todd Gunning. Ball comp to 74 nett.
