ULYSSES
WEDNESDAY of last week saw a contingent of one take off over to Junee.
Now it wasn’t a brilliant day but some of the old crew are getting a bit soft around the edges and prefer to dodge a few raindrops.
So Smithy took off on his new second hand CB1300 to test the waters, liked what he experienced and went across to Coolamon before coming home around lunch time.
The next day he did a squirt over to Collingullie then around the back way to The Rock, coming back up the Olympic Way home, once again in time for lunch.
There was a good representation at Billy’s on Saturday morning with 16 sampling the coffee, the cakes and the nefarious tales of old.
There was no official ride on Sunday but I am sure many would have gone out on a really beautiful day of sunshine and mild weather.
Our next ride is to the Chinese Gardens in Young this coming Sunday. The ride will leave McDonalds Edward Street car park at 9am.
This Saturday, between 8am and noon, we will be selling raffle tickets and generally dispensing all the left over stuff we would have auctioned after the Toy Run which got washed out.
We will be having a sausage sizzle running all morning and at 11am we will have an auction to sell of all the furniture donated to us by the Junee Jail, plus a few other items we still have on hand.
Joe Wilks will be the auctioneer on our behalf so come on along and make your bid.
If you make a reasonable offer for anything prior to the hammer falling we will lend a sympathetic ear.
So come and join the festivities and if you still have any toys to donate for the kids at Christmas bring them along.
See you Saturday - ride your bike down.
And of course the next big event of the year for most of us is Christmas Day, where our toys will go to delight many underprivileged kids.
WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
THE Vets kick-started another week of golf at the City Club when they played a 4BBB stableford event last Monday.
Consistent winners, Eddie Wall and John Burkinshaw, combined well yet again to collect the main voucher with a score of 25 points, one clear of Don Thorne and Don Kirwan, followed by the team of Peter Kirkman and Tony Martin 24 points, and John Hazell and Bill O’Rourke on 23 on a c/b.
The old fellas returned on Thursday for a single stableford event, and it seems a month-long break from the game did Garry Forde no harm whatsoever as he compiled 19 to win on a c/b from Ron Culgan, followed by Len Jenkins 18, Peter Kirkman, Don Thorne and Tony Thompson 17, Dennis Adams and Terry McInerney 16, and Bert Adams, 15, on a c/b.
The ladies nine-hole Summer Comp continued in the form of a stableford event last Tuesday, with Trish Gray showing the way with 16, from Jenny Hazell 14, and Joan Veerhuis 13.
The girls returned on Friday for a single stroke event, and it was well done to Colleen Mavroudis who scored 36 nett to get home by three shots from Vi Gardner and Anne Leonard, each on 39 nett. Ball comp to 41 nett.
Members played a two-person ambrose last Saturday, and once again, Eddie Wall took the honours, on this occasion, combining with low-marker, Warren Lynch to score 62 1/5 nett, followed by Max Horsnell and Peter Treharne 64 ¼, and John Hoey and James Richards 64 ¾.
NTPs went to Jim Briggs, Brad Burkinshaw and Roman Adamcewicz, while the ball comp went to teams with a nett score of 71 nett or better.

ORIENTEERING
GARINGAL’S Ross Morrison led the way in Event 3 of the WaggaRoos Summer Series of orienteering conducted last Thursday evening.
The event was held around Turvey Park and Mount Austin starting from the four Mount Austin bikeway in Maher Street.
Participants had a choice of a 45 minute or 30 minute time limit to find the answers to as many questions as possible about the locality. Points were earned for correct answers and lost for exceeding the time limit. Questions included counting the number of columns on a veranda, the colour of playground equipment and identifying specific power pole numbers.
The inclement weather reduced participation but did not deter a hardy few.
Ross Morrison from the Garingal club in Sydney took the opportunity to join the WaggaRoos and then proceeded to show them a clean pair of heels.
He ran strongly on the 45 minute course to amass an excellent 160 points from the possible maximum of 265. He not only ran fast but also ran close to the wire finishing just 2 seconds inside the 45 minute limit.
His only challenger was John Oliver who decided to proceed in an anticlockwise direction around the map but then faced a steady climb as he proceeded east towards the Botanic Gardens. As a result he accrued only 90 points which was well off the pace set by Ross.
On the 30 minute course Alex Davey proceeded clockwise to say in the western flatter areas around Anderson Park. As a result he was able to collect a very good 80 points in short time.
Pauline Moore finished second with 65 points by also staying in the western flatter areas. She completed a circuit similar to Alex but in reverse and although she also collected 80 points she lost 15 points for exceeding the 30 minute time limit.
Wes Campbell just lost track of the time and lost almost as many points as he earned.
Event 4 in the Summer Series of orienteering will start a 6pm on Thursday, December 14 at Manneke Park, Pugsley Rd, Estella. Newcomers are welcome. All that is needed is a watch.
Results. 45 Minute Course: Ross Morrison 160 points; John Oliver 90. 30 Minute Course: Alex Davey 80; Pauline Moore 65; Wes Campbell 30.
