A sea of red poppies clung to shirt collars as the large crowd paused to commemorate Remembrance Day at the Victory Memorial Gardens.
Master of ceremonies Mr David Gardiner said it was one of the best turnouts they’ve had in years.
The main address was given by Lieutenant Colonel and commanding officer of the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Elizabeth Stephens.
She read The Australian Slouch Hat a poem by serving corporal Ray Forsyth, capturing the pride of service in the military community.
“Ninety years ago Field Marshal Plumer at the dedication to the memorial of Menin Gate said, he is not missing, he is here,” Ms Stephens said.
“I say to you through our memorial, they are not missing, they are here.
“And I say also to all serving, all that are unable to serve, have been wounded, are ill or are injured, you are not alone, we are all here.”
