Boy killed in dog attack

A toddler has been killed and his grandmother hospitalised following a brutal dog attack in south-western New South Wales.

The two-year-old boy was visiting relatives on Deniliquin's Victoria Street when he was attacked by a mastiff cross on Sunday afternoon, NSW Police say.

His elderly grandmother, 70, made unsuccessful attempts to free him from the dog.

The boy's mother arrived in the middle of the attack and managed to free her son without injuring herself, a police spokesman said.

The pair were taken to the Deniliquin Hospital, but the child could not be saved.

His grandmother was treated for bruising, cuts and exhaustion.

The dog was seized by police and council rangers and destroyed overnight.

Police say a report is being prepared for the NSW Coroner.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
