GLEN INNES SEVERN COUNCIL: OVER 1,000kms OF ROAD NETWORK
Glen Innes Severn Council covers an area of 5,487 sq. km. Consequently, Council manages an extensive roads network.
The vast majority of our roads are unsealed. These important local roads, which connect our rural farms and communities, present an ongoing challenge. Our over 1,000 kms of road network consists of 758.3kms of unsealed roads and 377.38kms of sealed roads, which includes 67.6 km of Regional Roads (sealed State roads).
There are 52 timber bridges and 79 concrete and other bridges throughout the Local Government Area. Over the past 18 months there has been a significant up-grading of several rural bridges.
Council recognises that roads and bridges are of high importance to residents of the Local Government Area. Council purchased Glen Innes Aggregates Quarry in July 2011 and more recently has extended its quarry operations, purchasing the Wattle Vale site, west of the town. The quarries produce basalt aggregate from fresh rock for concrete production and bitumen road sealing. The raw materials from the quarries have assisted in the successful construction of local wind farm projects. The quarry businesses operate profitably, which has contributed positively to the funding of the roads and bridges program, further reducing the infrastructure backlog.
