NSW Health Pathology’s new laboratory is twice the size of the one in the old hospital and will also provide a wider range of pathology services for patients across the Western Riverina and operating “around the clock”.
While Wagga will be the established hub for pathology, the new lab will also enable people in small rural and remote towns to access high quality services, a spokeswoman for NSW Health Pathology said.
The Wagga opening comes three months after MIA residents successfully campaigned to stop the downgrading of pathology facilities at Griffith base Hospital.
NSW Health Pathology’s outpatient pathology collection remains in the existing hospital building and is due to be updated during stage 3 of the redevelopment.
From December 2017, the collection centre will be relocated to a temporary clinic on the campus.
