EXPLORERS RIFLE CLUB
THIS weekend was the NSW Queens Prize and Leadup matches. Shooting was over five days at the magnificent Anzac Rifle Range on the coast at Malabar Sydney. Whilst the weather was fine shooters were challenged by strong westerly winds the trickiest conditions to shoot under at Malabar. Many felt its sting!

ULYSSES
I WOKE up at six and rolled back the blinds to see a beautiful clear blue sky, so I concluded that this was going to be a great day for a ride somewhere. A few of us gathered at Billy’s Café, later in the morning, and four of us reckoned on a short ride down to Jindera for brunch and work out what was going to happen from there. We rolled out of town at about 9.30am and took the Olympic Way to The Rock and then on to Tootal, Milbrulong, and Lockhart where we swung left toward the Victorian Border and sailed through Walbundrie and Burrumbuttock before arriving at Jindera for the customary coffee and pie. While at Jindera the weather turned sour so we decided to return back home through Gerogery and the Olympic Way. Refuelled at Uranquinty and arrived home at about 2.30pm before the wet set in.
In spite of the cold weather there was a good roll up for coffee on Saturday morning. A frost on Sunday kept most at home so it was just Ian and Les and Crafty who went riding out along Mangoplah Road to Maxwell and then to Uranquinty. From Uranquinty they went to Collingullie then Currawarna and Matong where the checked out the Antique shop. A quick trip into Coolamon for coffee at the Cheese factory shop and then to Junee to sample the wares of the Liquorice Factory and the old ford museum next door. From Junee it was home the back way. From all accounts a good day out in nice weather.
The next Sunday ride is October 1 down Rutherglen way and on the 15th the Pink Ribbon ride will lead the way and I believe it is going to end up at the Mary Gilmore Festival at Ariah Park.
And all the Wednesday rides leave Billy’s Café, in Gurwood Street, at 9am. For further information regarding the Ulysses Club give Natcom a call on 1300 134 123 or you may contact the local branch president on 0418 517 673 or secretary on 0413 586 196.
ORIENTEERING
ROBBIE McDougall and Briohny Seaman were the winners of the WaggaRoos sprint distance orienteering event conducted around Wollundry Lagoon last Sunday. Sprint or short distance orienteering involves locating several features in a small area. Controls are set in a way that continually challenges the participant with changes in direction to test the ability to make rapid route choice decisions and read the detail on the map.
The 2.1km course involved locating 19 features in a series of loops and figures of eight around the Victory Memorial Gardens and the Civic Precinct.
WaggaRoos junior Joannah McDougall showed why she is the NSW W15 Schools Sprint Distance Champion by getting got off to a great start on the 2.1km course and recording the fastest time to the first two controls.
Briohny Seaman also started well and her experience and speed showed when she moved to the lead at the third control and thereafter was never headed recording a solid 40 second victory.
Joannah maintained second place for much of the race but in the latter stages was overtaken and finished fourth.
Debbie Davey started more steadily and was in third place for the first half of the race. She managed to move into second place mid-race but could not sustain it and eventually finished third.
Alex Davey had started much more conservatively and was in fourth place for much of the race but by mid race was starting to hit his straps. Towards the end of the race he managed to move into second place.
The 1.1km course involved finding 16 controls. Robbie McDougall won by a comfortable 93 seconds from Alexander Farquhar. Ryder Seaman was third.
Next week a number of WaggaRoos will be travelling to Bathurst regions for the Australian Orienteering Championships and Australian Schools Orienteering Championships. We wish them well.
Next local event will commence at 10am at Connorton on Sunday 8 October. Turn right off Holbrook Rd about 6km south of Jubilee Park just after crossing Stringybark Creek.
Results: 2.1km Course: Briohny Seaman 16.02; Alex Davey 16.41; Deb Davey 17.07; Joannah McDougall 17.49; John Oliver 19.16; Cameron McDougall 19.46; Wes Campbell 29.25; Ella & Duncan Farquhar 33.04. 1.1km Course: Robbie McDougall 13.30; Alexander Farquhar 15.03; Ryder Seaman 15.54; Logan Seaman 16.33; Jarrah Mestan 27.55; Kemran Mestan 27.56.
