Owned and operated by former senior Taronga zookeeper, Jacqui Love, Travelbugs offers the opportunity for children to get up close and personal with creepy crawlies found in backyard habitats and beyond.
Teaching kids all about the huge lives of Australia’s fantastic invertebrates is Jacqui’s passion.
Every workshop includes an opportunity for participants to handle live bugs, including large and colourful stick insects, centipedes, giant burrowing cockroaches, preying mantis, beetles, caterpillars and many more.
A large collection of over 200 specimens of preserved mini-beasts or “biofacts” are also made available to participating children including sea shells, urchins, starfish, sponges, corals, cocoons, eggs, eggs cases, skins and preserved insects.
Presenter Jacqui Love has a diverse range of qualifications including a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Science from Charles Sturt University, Zookeeping and Animal Attending Certificates from the Sydney Institute of Technology and an assortment of other specialty courses such as Spider Identification, Herpetological Techniques, Aquarium Science and Beekeeping.
Although she has experience and knowledge of a broad variety of animals, invertebrates and other "mini-beasts" have always been closest to her heart.
She developed invertebrate colonies and displays and conducted extensive invertebrate research for Taronga Zoo during her time there.
Prior to that Jacqui worked at the Sydney Tropical Butterfly House, where she presented workshops, lectures and tours as well as caring for and breeding a variety of butterfly species.
These school holiday workshops are perfect for the little entomologist in your family and will not be forgotten in a hurry.
When Jacqui previously delivered workshops for the library children departed with grins from ear to ear and a wonder at the secret lives of insects.
Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
A small cost of $10 per participant applies and children must be between five to 12 years of aged to participate.
