Saturday was the Sweepstakes event with about 20 shooters attending. This was shot at 1000 Yards in quite challenging wind conditions. It was certainly a challenging afternoon for all. However dinner at the Lockhart Ex-Servicemans Club was a welcoming warm venue to lick our wounds.
Sunday was the main event with 600Y, 500Y and 500Y – 15 shots to finish. The weather was beautiful and all enjoyed the warm sun and light breezes. Nevertheless the wind was still tricky with the mirage running heavily and changing often. There were 42 shooters in attendance.
At the presentation our president, Graham Crowe, was awarded Life Membership. And Linda was thanked for all the support she provides Graham and the club.
Thanks to the ladies running the kitchen and keeping all the shooters fed - Linda, Roz, Margaret, Sue and Kim. Also thanks to the rovers who did a great job scoring our targets. Emma, Matt, Keiran, and Our Butts Officer Noel.
Also thanks to Dave who organised the prizes and Graham for the scoring. And to all members who helped at working bees to make the day possible. Finally thanks to our sponsors including; Lockhart IGA, Ex-Services Club, Bendigo Bank, and A-Force.

ULYSSES
LAST week’s Wednesday ride was a wash out – literally. Saturday Meet and Greet was sparsely attended as half a dozen had gone to the Aircraft Museum in Temora. It was a great day out and the museum put on a terrific flying display as they always do. Six members from Albury/Wodonga came up for the day as did a small contingent from Wollongong. They did make comment on the cold weather, and yes, it was a very cool day not overly conducive to riding motorcycles or driving sports cars for that matter.
At our branch meeting last week Mary Smith took over the role of branch secretary and we wish her well in that demanding position. Trevor Bates is president and Elaine Scott treasurer.
Our next trip takes off today for an overnight stay at the Rabbit Trap Hotel in Albert up there in the north of the State. We have eight starters who have put their names down to brave the cold. The next ride is on September 3 which will take us in the hills Tumbarumba, Corryong and Jingellic way. Please note that this ride will depart McDonalds at 9am as will all of the spring, summer and autumn journeys At this stage you should have booked your accommodation at Jerilderie for the Tri Branch weekend, September 8 to 10.
You have seen us – riding out on the road wearing our “Old Man Logo” having a great time with our friends, growing old disgracefully! I guess you have wondered who we are and what we represent? This great club - the Ulysses Club - was formed in December 1983, from a meeting of five people at the Elizabeth Hotel in Sydney. Stephen Dearnley, who was known fondly as Old Number 1, was one of those five members, and with others, they adopted a draught constitution and laid down three basic purposes of the Club, which are:
- To provide ways in which older motorcyclists can get together for companionship and Mutual support.
- To show by example that motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages.
- To draw the attention of public and private institutions to the needs and views of older riders.
The Ulysses Club is not so much a motorcycle club, but a social club for older motorcyclists. To get the good oil contact the administration office on 1300 134 123 or email administration@ulysses.org.au. Or join online at www.ulyssesclub.org.
ORIENTEERING
WAGGAROOS juniors competed with distinction at the NSW Schools Orienteering Championships conducted at Wollongong last weekend. Five junior orienteers from Wagga amassed an incredible four first placings, four second placings and two third placings across the two championship events contested.
The Middle Distance Orienteering Championship was held at the Cataract Scout Park on Saturday and involved navigating around scrubby hillsides dotted with termite mounds and a confusing network of mountain bike tracks.
The Sprint Distance Orienteering Championship involved two races on Sunday, one at Wollongong University and the other at Wollongong TAFE, with the combined time placing participants. The two venues offered different challenges.
Cameron McDougall was the outstanding performer winning both the Middle Distance and Sprint Distance titles in the M14A class. His win in the Middle Distance race was convincing, finishing more than three minutes ahead of second place. On Sunday Cameron started well by winning the first of the two sprint races but was then outrun into second place in race two at the TAFE. Nonetheless he had done enough for his combined time to still be 42 seconds faster than his nearest rival.
Cameron’s sister, Joannah, also did very well winning the W15B Middle Distance title and then finished third in the Sprint Championship after moving up to the harder navigation in the W15A class.
Angus Roche competed in the M13-14B class winning the Sprint Championship and backing that up with an excellent second place in the Middle Distance Championship.
Lachlan Billett (M16A) who was recently selected in the NSW Schools representative team to contest the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships, ran well all weekend finishing second in both the Middle and Sprint Championship races.
Jack Janetski (M15A) has only been orienteering since February and has improved rapidly earning just reward for his efforts with a third in the Middle Distance and then a second in the Sprint Championship.
In the public races held in conjunction with the Schools Orienteering Championships WaggaRoos seniors also starred. Alex Davey (M60A) and Deb Davey (W60A) each won their Middle Distance and Sprint Distance races. Briohny Seaman won the W21 class Middle Distance race and backed that up with a worthy second in the Sprint Distance race.
The next local orienteering event is at 10am Sunday, August 27 in the Murraguldrie State Forest about 6km past the Hume Highway on the Tumbarumba Road.
