JUST  three of our crew took to the roads last week and took the old favourite track to Gundagai through Wantabadgery and from Gundagai it was up to Jugiong, then across to Harden and from Harden to Young where they propped for lunch. With lunch out of the way the trio motored over to Temora via Bribbaree and from there it was a leisurely trip back home. It was a nice dry sunny day, and all over by about 2pm.

Saturday saw only about ten drop in for a chat at Billy’s and I can understand why most people stayed home, it was freezing cold even in the warm spots. However those who did turn up had a pleasant hour or so relating tales tall and true over a nice hot drink and a late breakfast.

Our annual trek to Morundah Pub with Griffith and Albury/Wodonga was a great day out with 30-odd in attendance.  As usual mien host put on a great spread and I did note quite a few backing up for seconds.  The day started out to be all blue and sunny but by about 1pm that had all turned to crud and those who rode their bikes ended up with a wet bum and no fish. I suppose the transport arrangements for the day were bikes and cars about 50/50.  Mick Ellis excelled himself with a bit of help from Mutton Chops, they found a nice dirt road out of Boree Creek and took this attractive short cut to the target.  Well the nice dirt road turned out to be a quagmire and after Mick had been dumped a couple of times his bike and his self were covered in mud to the point where they had removed a large quantity of road surface. We held a raffle and raised $94 profit which will go to the Ulysses charity UCARF which does research into Arthritis.  

The Central Victorian Ulysses Branch is holding their Annual Golden Dragon Rally on September 29 until October 1 at Tarnagulla. There will be lots on offer to see and do with an entry fee of $15.  If you are half interested in going give Reg  (03 5439 3611) or Ian  (0404 031 206) a call. 

Our next adventure is to the Temora Aviation Museum on August 19, so please note that this is a Saturday instead of our usual Sunday day out. The museum will be conducting a flying day and it promises to be a great day out. 

On Wednesday, August 23, Woody is hosting a ride to Albert (up Tottenham way) for an overnight stay. 

WAGGAROOS extended their lead in the Interclub Orienteering Challenge against Albury last Sunday winning Event 7 by 19 to 12. WaggaRoos now have a 144:116 lead with just one event to be contested in the competition.

Event 7 was conducted at Rowdy Flat near Yackandandah. This is an old mining area and features an extremely complex network of short gullies with steep banks, numerous small knolls, and a good sprinkling of blackberry bushes. Past mountain bike activity has left a plethora of tracks many of which are now becoming less visible and more difficult to follow.

The complex terrain, wet weather and slippery terrain made navigation difficult and times were generally slow. In some cases the location of the control site was obvious and it was just difficult to get to. In other cases, particularly where running was less restricted, getting close was reasonably easy but working out exactly where to go became the challenge. Some participants found the going just too tough and did not complete their course.

Points in the Interclub Challenge are awarded on each course according to placings for an equal number of participants from each club.

WaggaRoos got off to a good start with Alex Davey winning the 3.7km Hard course and John Oliver finishing third. Albury’s Peter Mousley had a great run to finish second and minimise WaggaRoos advantage to 6:4.

However it was on the 3.0km Hard course that WaggaRoos did the damage. Deb Davey had an excellent run in the difficult terrain to win by almost 30minutes. Iain Crossett (W) then finished second and ahead of Albury’s first two finishers Norm McCann and Hugh Cameron. Each club had 3 participants on this course with the potential to earn points but because some withdrew and did not score points WaggaRoos gained an 11:7 point advantage on this course.

Kath Oliver (W) just held off a good challenge from Nick Mousley (A) on the 1.4km Easy course to secure a further 2:1 point advantage for WaggaRoos.

Noah and Tony Wilson (A) won the 1.8km Moderate course but because there were no WaggaRoos contesting this course no points were awarded.

The final event in the Interclub Challenge will be conducted in the Murraguldrie State Forest on Sunday 27 August. Newcomers are welcome. To get there drive towards Tumbarumba either through Ladysmith or via Gregadoo Rd. About 6km after crossing over the Hume Highway turn right into Burngoogee Fire Trail at the main Murraguldrie State Forest sign and follow the orienteering signs to the assembly area. Start from 10am.

LAST Saturday the junior tennis competitions got under way at the Forest Hill courts. The masters competition is for players wanting more serious tournament play, with proper tie-breaker sets being played. There is prizemoney for the top twenty players in the competition for all players having played five matches, as well as a best and fairest award. To take part, just turn up at the start time of 3pm until 5pm.    

Leading the masters competition after the first week is Oliver Plum on three points close behind is Caden Maxwell on two points then Pat Wright on one.

The junior tournament leader is Lachlan McDonald on four points ahead of  Zac McCarthy on three points then Tory Grantham on two points and Katie Thompson on a point. McDonalds Sports Awards for this week were: Masters winner Pat Wright. Junior Tournament winner was Katie Thompson.

The Wednesday’s Junior Doubles Tennis Competition at the Bolton Park Tennis Complex will resume today and is open to all juniors that are able to serve. To enter just turn up before the start time of 4pm finish at 6pm sharp.

Leading the competition is Caden Maxwell on 36 points then Sam Hood on 16 points close behind is Pat Wright on 15½ points with  Oliver Plum on 12 points and Zac McCarthy on 11 points making up the top five positions.

Division 1:  Cassie Gill 93-23-71; Division 2:  June Rootes 106-31-75; Division 1: Scratch - Kitty Howe 99; Division 2:  Scratch - Gloria Vonarx 99, Handicap - Trish Gray 103-27-76 c/b; Division 3:  Scratch - Joan Veerhuis 108;  Handicap - Sandra Donohue 112-35-77.

The course played hard on Wednesday according to the scores. John Parker winning A Grade with 35 from Geoff Nicholls 34. Rex Kember was the only player to beat his handicap winning B Grade scoring 39. Ray Barnett in second on 35 on a countback from Eddie Wall. 33  on count back won a ball whilst Mick Trancredi, Grahame Winson and Kyle Harrison took out the NTPs.

Peter Briggs won Thursday Vets with 35 from Roy Sanders, 36. Balls going down to 38 on a countback. Saturday we played a single Stableford, Warren Lynch was the winner of A Grade with 37 from James Richards 35. Bill Whalan, 38, took out B Grade from Mark McIntyre, 36, and Dave McCrea won C Grade, 36, on a count back from Darryl Dickinson. 31 on countback won a ball. Keiran Cotterill, Ray Barnett and Keith Bevan won the NTPs. Nine Hole Sunday comp was won by Ricky Bevan, 19 on a count back from Peter Austin. 

AT LOCKHART this Saturday it was a 600 Yard Trophy shoot. A working bee in the morning was very successful with all the targets being prepared for the upcoming prize meeting and new awning blinds installed as well as clubhouse cleaned. Thanks to all who assisted. The wind seemed strong from the right but was fairly readable with some good scores resulting. In F Class John Goodwin blitzed the field only dropping three points and finished four points in front of son Ben. There was a tight tussle in Target rifle between Dave and Scott with Scott narrowly taking it out by a point. The Trophy was won by Neville Lyons on Handicap.

A reminder that our prize meeting is coming up with the sweepstakes on Friday, August 19 and the main event on Sunday, August 20. So we only have next weekend to prepare. Next week will be a 700 Yard Shoot.

ON SUNDAY the lever rifle shooters took advantage of the space left by the cancellation of the Murrumbidgee Muster to enter a postal comp. The Blue Heeler is coming up on August 26 and 27. The range will be closed to casual shooters that weekend but as always spectators are welcome. Come and see what it takes to squash a fly at 500 metres.
