The Wagga Skyworks event, which will be held at Lake Albert, was given a $45,604 grant from council.
It is a break from tradition, with the midnight display being abandoned in favour of a “family friendly” display at 9.30pm.
The previous organisers, Committee 4 Wagga, announced they were handing over the reins last month after building the Victory Memorial Gardens event for four years.
Close to 60 per cent of Daily Advertiser readers polled said they wanted council to take over the event, despite advice from community services director Janice Summerhayes that staff were too stretched at that time of year.
