But there are quick fixes available for those who have run out of patience for that much needed entertaining deck.
With the right setting in mind, alfresco dining on a deck with outdoor heating and entertaining around cosy firepits can create the perfect atmosphere for spending time with family and friends in winter.
Trex’s low-maintenance wood-alternative decking can make building a deck in winter possible.
According to professional decking contractor Paul Lafrance, with Trex there is less time needed to be spent finishing the deck once it is built with no need for sealing or sanding.
“Wood decks require extensive upkeep, including seasonal sanding and sealing,” Mr Lafrance said.
“In Australia, regular maintenance is especially important due to the extreme temperatures and high winds.
“In fact, it is recommended that a wood deck be sealed every three to six months depending on exposure and the quality of the stain.”
He said the average deck in Australia measures about 35 square metres and requires seven hours to clear, clean, repair, sand, stain and seal, which can be a challenge to do when it’s cold.
“Multiply that by the recommended two to four times (of maintenance) per year and you’re looking at an investment of anywhere between 14 and 28 hours of labour,” he said.
“That seems like such a waste when you consider that cleaning a composite deck like Trex requires just a couple of hours annually.”
Composite decking has other benefits other than durability, easy maintenance and lasting beauty.
It is ideal for the cooler months when there is increased mould growth.
The decking contractor said it is also an eco-friendly option.
“Designed for maximum durability, Trex composite decking is made from 95 per cent recycled content, which makes it an ideal choice for eco-conscious consumers,” Mr Lafrance said.
“It resists fading, staining, scratching, mould and won’t rot, crack or warp, regardless of harsh weather conditions or daily wear and tear.
“It’s insect-proof and splinter-free, making it safer and more comfortable for families with kids and pets.”
Another highlight is that high-performance composite decks are engineered to last for 25 years or more, whereas a typical wood deck is only expected to last about 10 to 15 years.
“While a Trex deck may be a larger investment upfront, it proves a smarter investment than wood after just a few years.”
