Excellent tennis played last Saturday in the junior tennis competitions at the Forest Hill courts. 

The masters competition is for players wanting more serious tournament play, with proper tie-breaker sets being played. There is prizemoney for the top 20 players in the competition for all players having played five matches, as well as a best and fairest award. To take part, just turn up at the start time of 3pm until 5pm.    

Leading the masters competition with one week remaining is Caden Maxwell on 54½ points close behind is Oliver Plum on 4 ½ points with Sam Hood on 34 ½ points then Robert Grantham on 24½ points and Reece Rutland on 23 points make up the top 5 spots.

The junior tennis competition is open to all juniors wanting to play tennis in a friendly relaxed format, and is their first steps to playing competition. All players should be able to serve to take part. There will be trophies to all players having played at least five matches. As well there is a special best and fairest award presented at the end of the competition. This competition starts at 3pm to 5pm.

The junior tournament leader is Lachlan McDonald on 56 points ahead of  Zac McCarthy on 49 points then Tory Grantham on 45½ points with Mohamed Ghazy on 22½ points and Emma McDonald on 20 ½ points making up the 5 top places.

This week’s McDonald’s Sports Award went to: Masters winner Oliver Plum. Junior Tournament winner was Emma McDonald.

Wednesday’s Junior Doubles Tennis Competition at the Bolton Park Tennis Complex is open to all juniors that are able to serve. To enter just turn up before the start time of 4pm finish at 6pm sharp.

Leading the competition is Caden Maxwell on 28 points then Pat Wright on 14½ points close behind is Oliver Plum on 12 points with Sam Hood on 10 points and Zac McCarthy on 8 points making up the top five positions.

Twenty-eight teams competed for the Herb and Marj Siebels Perpetual Trophy in the 11th Annual Mixed Pairs Tournament sponsored by Duffy Bros Fruit & Vegetables with $1200 prizemoney.

Playing six games over two days on Tuesday and Wednesday with the top 14 teams on day one competing in Group 1 on day two and the remaining teams competing in Group 2.

Group 1 winners with 10 points plus 39 shots were Ron Francis and Elaine Larkin; runners-up prizemoney with 10 points plus 24 shots went to Doug Murray and Jenny Mitchell and 3rd place went to Paul Fitzgerald and Cheryl Darcy with 9 points plus 27 shots.

In Group two first place prizemoney went to Henry Sperrin and Colleen Kubak (sub Verna Quigley) with 7 points minus 1 shot; 2 nd place went to Max Simmons and Maureen Dowling of Tumut with 7 points minus 2 shots and 3rd place went to Darren Peak and Glenda Rose with 6 points plus 25 shots.

Saturday blind draw winners: Darren  Peak, Glen Cranswick 23 points; runners - up Andrew Carey, Don Anderson 22 points; 3rd place Gus Williams, Mile  Knezevic 21 points.

Sunday Mixed blind draw winners: Michelle Henderson, Owen Cotterill, Gary Newbold 24 points; runners - up Col Smith, Tiny Bower, Elaine Larkin 18 points; 3rd place Norma Gay, Tony Darcy, Ollie Henderson 15  points.

A few turned up at Billy’s last week for a Wednesday ride but the only one to take up the challenge was Les Smith who headed off around the district on his own.  I think there are a few who don’t want to risk getting their bikes frostbitten.

Saturday was not a great day but 15 or so managed to get out of the house for the 10am meet and greet session.  They all chose to sit inside because of the mother-in-law breath outside.

Sunday saw a handful of starters for the ride scheduled for the day.  Seven of us tootled off to Naranderra, six on bikes and Terry on his Spyder.  We stopped off at Gillenbah for a comfort stop and at this point the spyder peeled off on his own.  We continued on in a typical winter misty fog with about 3 metres visibility and  freezing cold conditions.  My hands were so cold I contemplated going back home,  but we all soldiered on and by the time we reached the Kay Hull Bridge the fog had lifted and we had some sunshine and the temperature was on the rise. 

We turned off at Wadi and went through Darlington Point and on to Whitton then to Leeton  where we stopped for lunch.  At Leeton Graham Spokes joined us for the rest of the run.   Micks Bakehouse had run out of food  when we arrived at 12.15pm so we went to the pub across the road and had a not-too-bad counter lunch.  From there we took the road to Colinrubie, Naranderra, Grong Grong, Matong. Currawarna and then home.  It was a great day out once we got into the sunshine with about 360 kilometers behind us.

Our branch meeting was held last night and the venue for the Christmas in July was discussed and we will let you know the result next week.  The next Sunday ride will be on July 2 to Young and Boorowa, leaving  Billys at 9.30am and, of course, each Wednesday ride will leave Billy’s Café at 9.30am.

Murphy’s Motorcycle Laws:  1. A Motorcycle cannot/ and will not fall over without an audience.  2. The fact that your keys are still in your pocket will  become apparent after you put you gloves on. 3. Motorcycles are to yellow bugs what aircraft carriers once were to Kamikaze Pilots  4. Quick fixes are named for how long they will stay fixed.  5. The only part you really  need to repair your bike will be the only part on permanent back-order.  6. Nothing is harder to start than a used motorcycle being shown to a prospective buyer.  7.  The only time you will suffer a punctured tyre is the time you leave the repair kit at home. 8. “Universal” accessories are so named because that is where you must search to find the bike they fit.

Reasonably still conditions again at Lockhart for a 700-yard trophy match at Lockhart this weekend won on handicap by John Dixon. Prior to the shoot David Xuereb’s Pressure Tank Fire Tank was installed and fired up.  And it works a treat!

In F Class Neville Lyons was the clear winner with a strong second stage. In Target rifle Dave Xuereb came out on top with two good stages.

Next weekend will be a 800-yard shoot. Some work will be done in the morning on our targets.  Preparing for our prize meeting in August.

Peter Conlin took out the A Grade event on Wednesday scoring 38 points from resident Pro Tim Barlow in second on 37 points beating Bob Alexander on a count back also on 37 points. B Grade winner was Denis McGrath 36 points on a count back from Kerry Smith, Tom McDonnell coming in third 35 points. Peter Conlin, Tony Merrigan and Kyle Harrison winning the NTPs.

John Wilson has made a return to the Vets taking out the Thursday comp on a 3 way count back from Don Thorne and Ken Batt all on nett 31. All 34s got in the ball list.

Ladies played a mulligan event on Friday where they were allowed to re-play 6 of their non desired shots. Division 1 Winner: Maggie O'Rourke 43 Pts;  Runner-up Lorraine Hickey 42 Pts

Division 2 Winner:  Val Brunskill 45 Pts;  Runner Up Marg. Hogan 44 Pts NTP:  Val Brunskill.

Monthly Medal was played on Saturday. Mic Laurent won A Grade 71 Nett from Bob Alexander and Roman Adamcewicz both on 72 Nett. B Grade was won by Jim Neiberding beating Ross Henley on a count Back 69 Nett, Steve Weeton in Third 71 Nett. C Grade winner and best score of the day was Ethan Perry 68 Nett from Peter Austin 69 Nett and Peter Fulmer 70 Nett.

Garry Rake won the Sunday 9 Hole comp 21 points from Bazza Miller and Patty McRedmond on 20 points.
