A well-known local historian and author, Ms Morris was named as a Medal of the Order of Australia recipient on Monday for her tireless work revealing Wagga’s history to the community.
While Ms Morris had written more than 30 books on local and regional history over the years, she said one of her greatest achievements was her most recent book, Kapooka, From Engineers’ Camp to Home of the Soldier.
“History is so important to know where you’ve been, to find out what life is all about now,” Ms Morris said.
“Regional history is different to general history and it’s interesting to find out who the important people and events were.”
Ms Morris said it was a “great honour” to be recognised with an OAM.
“It’s something I never expected but getting an award for something you love doing is always a pleasure,” Ms Morris said. “I really enjoy writing history but it’s also about helping people. They ring up all the time and ask me questions.”
