Explorers Rifle Club
A GOOD weekend to enjoy the glorious autumn weather and get in some serious shooting. Saturday morning we shot 700 yards in order to get ready for Sunday’s District Champion competition at Tumut. In the afternoon it was 1000 yards but it seems we may have put a shot through a sensor and so we changed to the manual target in order finish before light failed. A big thanks to Dave who volunteered to mark for us and give everyone else a chance to get at least one stage of practice.

Next was the Riverina DRA Champions match with the top marksmen/women fronting up for honors. Great to see John Oddy, Peter Spannagle and Brian Wurtz in attendance who have had a rough trot with health issues in the last year but formed a cheer squad for the competitors. Also present were the dynamic duo Jacinta and Darren Bradley fresh from their success in Adelaide and Jacinta bring her bling along for all to see.
Obviously it was then a forgone conclusion who two of the winners were going to be with Darren cleaning up F Standard and Jacinta in F Open. In FTR Dave Xuereb threw his hat into the ring and came out on top and Scott Brindley was again the Fullbore champion. A great venue with a mob of some 40 or so kangaroos sitting on the sidelines and indeed in front of the guns watching proceedings with as much interest as the human spectators. Next week will be 300 Yards.

ORIENTEERING
EIGHTY students participated in the 2017 Riverina Schools Orienteering Championships conducted on May 8 and schools from across the region were represented. Starting from the Botanic Gardens Music Bowl the courses took participants through the adjacent bushland looking for specific earth walls, rock faces, depressions and distinctive trees. The wonderful weather assisted some excellent performances. Considering many had not been orienteering previously all did very well indeed.
Girls 10-11 age-class Jada Murphy (Henty) was outstanding winning the 1000m course by a massive six minutes from her classmates Isabel Lieschke and Maddison Heanes. Konnar Betts (Henty) was not as fast as Jada around the same course but still won the Boys 10-11 age-class by eight minutes. Harry Doig (Henty) and Jonathan Coe (Henty) did very well finishing second and third but were well off Konnar’s pace. By contrast the 1300m Girls 12-13 age-class could not have been closer. Halle Corrigan (Henty) won by a single second from Molly Murray (Henty) and Louise Hasler (Henty).
Henty also dominated the 1600m Boys 12-13 age-class. Hamish Lieschke won ahead of Blake Roulston and Cameron Terlich. WaggaRoos Joannah McDougall (Wagga High) put in a solid performance to win the 1300m Girls 14-15 age-class but was pressed all the way by Lily Stein (Wagga High) and Lucy McKelvie-Hill (TRAC). Joannah’s brother Cameron McDougall (Wagga High) had it much more comfortably on the 1600m Boys 14-15 age-class finishing well ahead of Angus Roche (TRAC) and Jack Janetski (St Pauls College)
TRAC dominated the 2000m Boys 16+ age-class filling the first three places. Lachlan Billett continued his good form finishing just ahead of William Cronk with Kade Mavroudis not far behind in third place. All three are regular orienteers with WaggaRoos.
Amy Livermore had it all her own way being the sole participant in the 1600m Girls 16+ age-class.
The 3 x 900m relay provided a lot of interest and 27 teams participated. Henty (Joel Zweck, Jonathan Coe and Konnar Betts) won the Primary Schools Relay and TRAC (Will Cronk, Angus Roche and Lachlan Billett) won the Secondary Schools Relay.
At the club level WaggaRoos continued their winning ways against Albury winning Interclub event 3 at Walbundrie 4 to 2. The Saturday event saw a slightly smaller attendance than usual. WaggaRoos John Oliver won the 5.2km Hard Course by a mere 11 seconds from Rod Gray (Eureka). Albury’s Matt Flower was third. Wes Campbell (W) won the 3.6km Hard course a little more comfortably finishing 5 minutes ahead of Albury’s Hugh Cameron. Jack Janetski won the2.3km Moderate course very comfortably from Albury’s Ethan Rahaley. Tom & John Janetski finished the 1.8km Easy course ahead of Kath Oliver (W). WaggaRoos now have a strong 45:29 points lead.

ULYSSES
IT HAS been a bit quiet this last week with most getting ready for the trip north to Wauchope this coming weekend. It is to be expected that about 30 to 40 will be going from this area to enjoy the festivities. A few went for a ride around the district last week and on Saturday we had a good turn out at Billy’s Café for Meet and Greet and on Sunday a few went riding to escape Mother’s Day. Then again there were quite a few who spent the day entertaining Mother, lavishing her with exotic food and wine.
We had our May branch meeting, which was preceded by a short committee meeting and we will give you the details of all that next week. The next branch ride is scheduled for May 21, so if you are not going to the AGM turn up at McDonalds at about 8.30am. The next ride is June 4. All rides for June, July and August depart at 9.30am.
