ORIENTEERING
THERE was an exciting four-way tie for first place in event six of the WaggaRoos Summer Series of Orienteering conducted last Thursday evening. The event was held around Tatton and involved answering a series of questions about the suburb within a set time limit. Questions included identifying particular features on playground equipment, specific wording on signs, and the numbers on specific power poles. Points were awarded for correct answers and deducted for exceeding the time limit.
On the 45 minute course four orienteers tied for first place with each collecting an excellent 170 points out of a possible 190. Each went a slightly different way but remarkably ended with the same score. Will Cronk, Alex Davey, Rod Gray and John Oliver shared the honours for the evening.
Kade Mavroudis actually amassed a very good 175 points but suffered a 10 point penalty for exceeding the time limit which reduced his score to 165 and relegated him to 5th place.
Trent Seaman (150), Iain Crossett (145) and Kobe Priest (140) were all in the mix but ended up slightly off the pace. Iain Crossett took out handicap honours for the night.
On the 30 minute course Debbie Davey (70 points) just held off Wes Campbell (50).
Event seven in the series will commence at 6pm next Thursday evening from Bentley Place in central Wagga.

ULYSSES
IT WAS a case of “Just the Two of Us” last week as Alan and I scuttled off to the Mountains. We left Billy’s at about 9:20am and headed to Gundagai via Wantabadgery and Nangus. Our plan was to head up to Tumut through Brungle, which is what we did, only we went to Coolac and took the road to Adjungbilly and then the Darbalara Road to Brungle, following the River. A stretch of the legs at Brungle and then up to Tumut for a cuppa and a sandwich. After a short spell we then took the path to Wondalga and then went over the hills on the Broad Leaf Way and turning right prior to Rosewood and headed to Tarcutta down the Westbrook Road.
A stop at Tarcutta to refresh the inner man and then home down Mates Gully Road. The weather for the day was nice and cool with rain threatening to fall at any time but apart from a few spits the day was great. However five minutes after reaching home base and getting the bikes in the shed down came the liquid sunshine.
There was a goodly attendance at the Saturday Meet and Greet with about 20 escaping the kitchen for the morning and with an even mix of boys and girls. Of course the morning discussion was along the lines that it usually follows with no great feats of endeavour being disclosed. Terry is on the lookout for a new job after escaping from the Juvenile Justice Centre but is quite content to coast for a while and recharge his batteries. Jean invited all present around to the Purvis Establishment after tea for a few drinks to prepare Neil (Princess) for his 62nd birthday on Sunday. We couldn’t go because our second generation family came to visit, and to be honest with you that was probably just as lively.
Saturday was predicted to be in the high 30s but that didn’t happen and Sunday looked to be about the same with a bit of high cloud.
The Sunday Ride with Mick Ellis and Ian Adams. Ian and I took off for Holbrook and refreshment at the Submarine Cafe. Then off to Walwa where, despite the heat, there was nearly a constant stream of bikes passing through. Then off through the valley to Tintaldra and up the hill into Tumbarumba for lunch and more refreshments. After lunch we did the run through to Rosewood and turned off at Carabost headed for Humula, Tarcutta and back to Wagga along the highway. We decided that more refreshments would take too long so we pushed through in the heat to relieve the heat being radiated from the seat. 38.5 degrees was on the temp gauge coming past Borambola and might I say it was good to see the speed limit signs at Forest Hill.
We changed the destination for today as there has been quite a lot of road works along Linden Roth Dr and Elliott’s Way. But despite the heat it was a good run.
For those of you going to the AGM in Port Macquarie this year it might be a good time to start booking in. or those wishing to opt for Tent City the closing date is Friday, April 28. The dates for this year’s AGM are Monday, May 22 through to Sunday, May 28 and if you have lost your Riding On with the entry form you can book on line or give Natcom a call on 1300 134 123.
