The Tri Branch weekend at Griffith could well have been a dismal failure but with the fighting spirit of the average Ulyssian in full force, all obstacles were overcome. Four of us (Peter, Pat and Les with Mary in a Tin Top) left Wagga on Friday afternoon with rain pending but it was fine at the time we left at 2pm. However the minute we reached the city limits down she came, just a wee bit to start with but by the time we got to Coolamon the rain was fair dinkum and the closer we got to Ardlethan it was more fair dinkum. At this point we pulled into the Ardlethan picnic area to survey our predicament. Peter Meiklejohn discovered that his $1 wet weather suit was not all that it was cracked up to be and made noises about taking it back to the Cootamundra Swap Meet where he had purchased his bargain. He was reminded by Les that the swap meet would not reconvene until next year and he best swallow his $1 loss. After making a few adjustments to improve our comfort we then continued on to Griffith, in what had now become steady and persistent rain. We booked into our caravan park accommodation, hung all of our dripping clobber out to dry, got dressed into some dry gear and proceeded to the barbecue area. The Griffith mob had a barbecue tea in full swing for the Wagga and Albury/Wodonga crews.
On Saturday morning, Graham Mutton and Mick Ellis arrived in time to catch the conducted tour of the surrounds, once again in rain. The rest of us settled into Bortoldo’s Bakery for breakfast/ morning tea. After morning tea it was back to the camp to run a few things through the clothes dryer and then move on to the Griffin Plaza for lunch. The ‘Merry Widows’ (Lorraine, Irene, Gloria, Ann) along with Elaine went on a winery tour in the afternoon, some did other things and some had a snooze to recharge for the evening meal at the Griffith Leagues Club. The meal there was absolutely magnificent. Sunday morning we all had an early breakfast at the manager’s residence, being piped in by Bob Scott on his trusty bagpipes, and by 10am we were on the road back to Wagga. The Wagga contingent only sported 7 bikes and the rest of the crew went by car for fear of getting wet. Albury Wodonga had a few more bikes and the Griffith mob seemed to favour cars, except for Darryl Ross on his 2 litre Peugeot powered trike. It turned out to be a great weekend with the MIA Branch being the excellent hosts they always are.
On Sunday next (18th) there will be a ride to Rutherglen that will be a distance of roughly 400ks. The ride will leave from McDonald’s Edward Street car park at 9am. Please note that all rides over the summer months are 9am starts and that includes the Wednesday rides.
Our next branch meeting is on September 20th at the Radio Club rooms starting at 7:30pm and the doors will open at 7pm to allow a little socialising before the meeting. After the meeting, which is usually brief, supper will be available at $2 with a variety of drinks available.
A three day ride is being organised for the long weekend but at this stage I still don’t have the fine details, suffice to say it will be Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
Undeterred by recent wet weather, a small but very keen band of vets played a nine-hole 4BBB event last Monday, with the honours going to the team of Tony Pollard and Bob Moore with 27 stableford points, on a c/b from John Burkinshaw and Eddie Wall.
John backed up Monday’s effort by shooting the lights out with his 13-under-his-handicap score of 29 points to win Thursday’s nine-hole stableford event easily from Grahame Winson, 24 points, followed by Ken Batt, Tony Thompson, Don Thorne and Russell Parr on 22 points, and Peter Briggs and Roy Sanders, each on 21 points.
In last Wednesday’s members stableford event, Grahame Winson played steadily for 37 points to win the A grade voucher, from Tony Luff, 35 points. In B grade, Geoff Hanns scored 34 points to get home from Richard Flanagan, 33 points. Roman Adamcewicz had some sort of day out with his irons and fairway metals when he collected all three NTP prizes, while the ball comp went to 32 points on a c/b.
A shortened week of rain-affected golf was wound up with Sunday’s nine-hole stableford event, which was won by Jonathon Punch with 21 points on a c/b from Shane McPherson, while Peter McDonald, Kai Picciolo and Steve Seetana each collected a ball with 17 points on a c/b.
WAGGA SSAA
On Sunday the range was awash with running water but that didn’t stop nine rather muddy centrefire field rifle shooters.
It was close but Rob Wells on 319 took it by one point from Mick Doughty then Paul Passlow 314.
Jake Sizer, the only junior, managed a credible 283.1 and sixth place. This was Jake’s first competition shoot, in Wagga at least.
Saturday the 17th is black from 1.30 and Sunday the 18th is 100y centrefire group from 10am.

Lockhart Bowling Club
The annual presentation evening of the Lockhart Bowling Club was held on September 10, following several games of bowls and a very well presented barbecue which was prepared by president Barry Love and other kind helpers.
Unfortunately, several members set to receive awards were unable to be present. In making the presentations president Barry Love thanked the sponsor, Mr Mark Schirmer, for his generous donation of all the engraved trophies. This kind of sponsorship encourages bowlers to achieve, and others are encouraged to be sponsors if they so desire. Mark was unable to be present because of a prior commitment.
Vice president Max Montgomery spoke highly of the fine effort that the committee had given to the club during the year. The club made a substantial profit last financial year and with the increased membership things look very bright for the future.
PRESENTATIONS FOR 2016: Singles Club Champion: Jason Healy, known as a keen golfer in the area. Singles Runner Up: Max Montgomery. Max paid tribute to Jason for the manner in which he played and will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. Pairs Club Champions: Barry Love and Max Montgomery. Pairs Runners Up: Steve Johnstone and Keith Bender. Triples Club Champions: Barry Love, Scott Chandler and Terry Mildren. Triples Club Runners Up: Keith Wilson, Jim Quee and Stewart Carn.
The annual general meeting and presentation of the annual report will take place on September 25, 2016 at 10am. All developments past and future will be discussed at this meeting as well as election of officers if required.
Congratulations to all the winners and especially those who tried and were unsuccessful but displayed the fine spirit of the game of bowls.
