WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
After so much recent rain, the girls were just glad to get back on the golf course when they competed in the Penny Bowen Challenge over nine holes last Tuesday. Kitty Howe claimed Division 1 honours with a score of 38 nett, while Trish Gray played well in the heavy conditions for a nett score of 36 to win Division 2.
Last Monday’s nine-hole vet’s stableford event was taken out by Dennis Adams with a score of 23, followed by Les Hodges, Bob Moore and Danny McIntyre on 22, and Charlie Down on 21.
The weather was once again a factor last Wednesday, however big improver, Noel Murray, managed the conditions better than anyone else in the small field as he scored 36 pts to win the day.
It was a far better turn-out for Saturday’s member’s stableford event, and in A Grade, Paul Mauger hung in there for 36 to beat Adrian George 35, while in B Grade Steve Hall left his driver in the bag and used his three-metal to keep the ball in play off the tee for 38, and a one-point win from wet-track specialist, Peter McDonald. Greg McMahon cleaned up in the
C Grade event with 34, followed by Frank Veliscek on 32. NTP’s to Ray Bell and Ray Harrison. Ball comp to 30.
The week wound up with Sunday’s nine-hole stableford event, which was won by Kyle Harrison with 19 pts on a c/b from Steve Seetanna. Ball comp to 17.
WAGGA SSAA
The Murrumbidgee Muster black powder weekend attracted a reduced field of 11 but with shooters from Sydney, the south coast and Victoria returning home with very positive reports I expect it to grow now that it is an annual event again. A big thank you is due to David Wheeler or the time he spent ensuring the shoot was so successful.
Top gun for the weekend was David Wheeler on 749 from visitor Chris Johnson 563 and Mark Wheeler 463. A pity Garry Moore left his 45/70 ammo at home.
Saturday the 13th is shotgun from 1.30 and Sunday the 14th rimfire field followed by rimfire silhouette. For more information contact Don Ewin on 6926 3757 or donbruce8@bigpond.com.

Explorers Rifle Club
The weekend was a 700 Yard Trophy shoot at Lockhart in fine conditions with a light breeze to keep things cool. Thanks to all those who helped in the working Bee in the morning. Dave and Ben put the finishing touches on our new target frames. Scott got the water in the pits pumped out. Trahlon cleaned out the club house and Ben also got some lawn mowing done. Preparation for upcoming prize meeting is now nearly done. Just some more lawn mowing next weekend and tidy up of clubhouse.
On the mound Ben Goodwin dominated with a top F Open score on the small target. In target rifle three 97s were scored with Scott coming out on top on centres.
In juniors Trahlon Lyons is really getting the hang of things with an excellent 43 for his second stage and Sam Hunt enjoyed his second shoot with an improved score. Overall Ben was the trophy winner.
Neville had a go at TR and reckoned it was pretty good! So we expect him to switch over now from F class.
Jeremy, Hayden and Scott caught up on the range on Sunday and pumped water out of the lake behind 500. Photo attached with Hayden the Fireman.

ORIENTEERING
WaggaRoos had another solid 28:21 win in the Interclub Challenge against Albury last Sunday.
Conducted at Pomingalarna Reserve the courses took participants around the hillsides looking for particular contour banks, track corners, and trees. Points in the Interclub Challenge are awarded according to placings for an equal number of participants from each club on each course.
A special feature of the event was a mountain bike orienteering course. In mountain bike orienteering participants must stay on the tracks. Route planning is very important to minimise distance and climb.
A few hardy souls completed their foot orienteering race and then went out on the mountain bike course. Rick Armstrong (Albury) chose his routes well and had fastest time on most legs. He was [particularly strong towards the end of the course where a couple of steep climbs found other participants tiring.
Leigh Privett (A) was never far behind but did wane in the latter stages. WaggaRoo Iain Crossett, who had never done mountain bike orienteering before, did very well on his first outing and finished in third place. Iain was in the mix until the ninth control when he followed the wrong track and lost time. Nonetheless he earned a valuable point for WaggaRoos.
WaggaRoos set up their win on the 5.5km Hard course. Albury’s Matt Flower powered up the first hill and was the fastest into the first control. Alex Davey (W) was quickest to the second control and assumed the lead. But then he and Matt faltered at the third. Briohny Seaman (W) grabbed a two minute advantage at that point and was not headed thereafter.
WaggaRoos had Briohny first, Alex second and Debbie Davey fourth to snare the major share of the points and win the 5.5km course 22:14.
On the 4.3km Hard course points were shared 5:5. WaggaRoos Julie Gooding and Iain Crossett both started well and led the field through the first two controls. Then Iain had difficulties finding the third and fourth controls and Julie struck problems at the fifth and the ninth controls. Albury’s Rick Armstrong was steady throughout and eventually had a comfortable win. Julie and Iain finished on 22 seconds apart in second and third places respectively with Albury’s Emma Flower fourth.
Iain’s effort earned him handicap honours for the day.
Will Cronk (W) won the Moderate course despite running to the last control before realising his error and heading off to correctly find the first control. An error finding the fourth control did allow the Farrell family to sneak past but by the sixth control Will was back in front and stayed there.
There were no Albury participants on this course so no points were awarded giving WaggaRoos a win for the day and a healthy 162:108 lead after seven event. The last event in the Interclub Challenge will be held just north of Albury at Mt Terrible on Sunday September 4.
Results: 5.5km Hard Course: Briohny Seaman (W) 47.12; Alex Davey (W) 49.55; Leigh Privett (A) 55.27; Debbie Davey (W) 57.01; Rob Simmons (A) 62.04; Matt Flower (A) 63.26; Kade Mavroudis (W) 70.36; Norm McCann (A) 97.39. 4.3km Hard Course: Rick Armstrong (A) 51.20; Julie Gooding (W) 70.16; Iain Crossett (W) 70.38; Emma Flower (A) 96.27. 3.2km Moderate Course: Will Cronk (W) 41.26; Farrell Group (W) 61.24. 2.3km Easy Course: Kath Oliver (W) 45.11. 6.4km MTBO Course: Rick Armstrong (A) 66.25; Leigh Privett (A) 72.05; Iain Crossett (W) 89.06; Will Jessup (A) 109.59; Graeme Jessup (A) 111.54.
Ulysses
It has been a good week with four venturing out last Wednesday on trip up the snowy way. They stopped off at Tumut, bought some takeaway tucker and went up to the Blowering Dam wall for a picnic lunch. After spending an hour the next part of the day was a trip down to Adelong Falls home to Wagga down the Snowy Mountains Highway, the Hume and The Sturt. Another day spent with good weather and good company.
Saturday morning at Billy’s was well patronised with a pleasant morning spent sharing the local gossip over a nice hot drink washing down a muffin.
The crowning glory for the week was the trip over to the Morundah Hotel for lunch on Sunday. In total 76 riders turned up from Wagga, Albury/Wodonga and the MIA with and even spread from each area. The meal was up to the usual high standard offered by Mein Host and no one left hungry. Lorraine, Elaine and Dee ran a raffle which raised $130 and that money will be given to UCARF which is the Ulysses Club Arthritis Research Foundation.
