The cool weather deterred some from attending but the forest temperatures were ideal for running. However, running was somewhat restricted because the Murraguldrie State Forest was literally flowing.
In the Interclub Challenge points are awarded in each course according to placings for an equal number of participants from each club. The low participation rate kept the competition close.
John Oliver got the WaggaRoos off to a good start by winning the 5.6km Hard course ahead of Albury’s Leigh Privett.
On the shorter legs the two had very similar times. However, John was more effective on the longer legs and managed to build his 3-minute winning margin with superior route choice. Debbie Davey (W) also lost time on the long leg to the 8th control and finished third.
Dale Clegg continued WaggaRoos winning ways with a comfortable victory on the 3.6km Hard course despite spending over 20 minutes looking for one control. However, Albury’s Hugh Cameron and Norm McCann had even more troubles at a number of controls and both finished well behind Dale.
Albury did have some success when Ronice Goebel won the 3.9km Moderate course.
Her Albury teammate Helen Jerome finished in second place less than two minutes behind. Kooringal Public School student, Harriet Priest, who came third in her age class at the recent Riverina Schools orienteering championships, did very well on her first Moderate course to finish in third place and score one point for the WaggaRoos.
This was after having won the 2.1km Easy course in a very quick time and well ahead of the Crossett family and Farquhar family groups.
The final result for the day was WaggaRoos 5 to Albury 4 and after five events WaggaRoos lead the competition 114:70.
Event 6 in the Interclub Challenge will be on July 24 near Gerogery.
The next local event will be on Sunday, July 10 starting from CSU Boorooma Street campus carpark 11 at 10am.

A few hardy Vets turned up for last Monday’s nine-hole stroke event, with Bob Moore scoring 31 nett to edge out Peter Kirkman and Roy Sanders, each with 32 nett.
There was a better roll-up for Thursday’s event, and the club once again welcomed a number of Country Club members, including Hedley Chapman, who took the day’s honours with a great score of 24 nett.
Local lads, Ron Culgan and Danny McIntyre, shared second spot on 29 nett, followed by Ken Batt 30, and Keith Bevan, Barney Matthews, Bill O’Rourke and Tony Pollard, each with scores of 31 nett.
The ladies competed for their June Monthly Medal last Tuesday, with congratulations going to Dee Harley who scored 71 nett to claim the major prize. Cold and heavy conditions welcomed members last Saturday as they competed in their 4BBB Stableford event.
The team of Ray Harrison and Michael Buckley combined well for 43 pts to win the day, from Mark McIntyre and Matt Tooze, 42 pts.
Matt completed a good day by winning the individual A Grade prize with 38 pts, which was a great score off a low handicap in the tough conditions.
The B Grade trophy went to early-starter, Tony Merrigan, with 35 pts, while C Grade was taken care of by Tim Harris, also with 38 pts. NTP’s to Ray Harrison, John Parker and Steve Hall. Ball comp to 39 pts.

THE day was pretty wet last week so no mid-week ride eventuated. However there was a good turnout of gossipers for a morning coffee before they all went home.
There was also a good gathering on Saturday morning for Meet and Greet at Billy’s.
There was no official ride on Sunday but I do know that one or two braved the elements and speared off into the unknown.
Next Sunday the ride will be a round tour of the countryside in the direction of Grenfell.
Total distance will be about 350kms and the next ride which will be on July 17 is off to Tallangatta and will cover a similar distance.
On July 16 we are having a Christmas in July function at the William Farrer.
Theme will be a Beetles Tribute singer strumming away will be the lead.
The Farrer require us to pay a week prior to the event, so if you could go and pay by Monday 11th at the latest that will be appreciated.
The cost is $48 per head and, of course, that includes the meal.
Both Sunday and Wednesday rides depart at 9.30am on these winter mornings. Sundays from McDonalds car park in Edward Street and Wednesdays from Billy’s Café in Gurwood Street.
Meet and Greet on Saturday mornings from 10am. See you on the highway.
