The mid-week pension crew headed west on June 15 and took the back road to Matong and then to Narrandera. They didn’t go into Narrandera but continued on down to Hay, taking the right turn across to Yanco about 25km down. Arriving at Yanco, it was time for lunch so they headed for the Leeton Hotel. After the usual camaraderie over lunch it was back on the bikes to Ardlethan via Colinroobie and Kamarah. After short stop at Ardlethan they took the London Hills road to Coolamon and arrived home, in Wagga, in time for afternoon tea and bickies. A good day out racking up about 350 kilometers of pleasant riding.
Saturday morning saw a good turn out at Billy’s for Meet and Greet and it was warm enough to sit outside on the side walk, (Yankee talk). I was late arriving due to a prior commitment but managed to down a mug of coffee and have a chat to a few stragglers. Pete M had to go, his stomach was telling him it was nearly lunch time and he had a bit of shopping to do. Peter has just taken delivery of his Velocette LE after having it fully restored back to original condition. The LE was a 150cc (later 200cc) water cooled super quiet bike and was used extensively by police forces in various countries.
On Sunday, six of us left McDonalds at 9.30am and navigated to Culcairn by way of Lockhart and Walbundrie. We arrived 10 minutes late to find the Albury/Wodonga gang waiting patiently for us. From Culcairn the A/W crew led the ride back to Wagga through Morven and Mangoplah and when we approached Wagga we took the lead and ended up at the club rooms in Small Street, where we stoked up the barbecue and boiled the billy for hot drinks. In all, there were 20 riders from Albury/Wodonga and another six of our crew turned up for lunch. Lunch spread over a couple of hours and at about 2.15pm our visitors called it quits and rugged up for the journey back to the border. And as they did down came the rain, luckily not too heavy but enough to dampen the spirits. It turned out to be a very pleasant day, a nice short ride, a great barbecue lunch and good company.
Last night was our June branch meeting. The next official ride will be on Sunday, July 3, leaving McDonalds at 9.30am. I will tell you next week where that ride will take us, let’s hope for a nice day. And, of course, the Wednesday riders leave Billy’s Café at 9.30am and pick a destination on the day. That pick depends on many factors. The weather, what they had for breakfast, what time they need to be back for a poppy nap, the distribution of fuel stops, where to stop for lunch … and so the list goes on.
Winter is not all doom and gloom for motorcycling, so when the day is looking promising come and join us. It is a lot easier to get warm and stay warm in winter than it is trying to keep cool on a scorching summer day.
It is most important to have good rubber under you and also to have your rear brake working to maximum efficiency.
WAGGA SSAA
The time of our monthly meeting has changed to the second Tuesday of the month from 7pm at the Boat Club.
On Saturday, five black powder followers braved the damp conditions, not ideal for flintlocks, but do not despair fellows there are now more efficient firearms available. It was tight but David Wheeler (72) came ahead of Gerard Regan (71) and Garry Moore (70). Close behind were Brett Regan and Paul Passlow.
The 100y score match on Sunday saw what appeared to be dead calm conditions, not a movement in the flags. However, there was a right to left air movement, or was it mirage, to convert potential tens to nines. The club records of best target of 50.04 and best agg of 249.xx have stood for over 10 years but no longer. Paul Deehan carded a 50.05, a perfect score and in custom class Barry Wild (250.16); Paul Deehan (250.15); Don Ewin (250.10) and Andrew Butts (249.09) all bettered the old mark. In factory class Terry Robinson, returning to centrefire after a long break, showed he still has the old skill to top score on 248.06. He was followed by Bruce Milne 244.07 and Josh Arundell 239.03
Sunday, June 26 will be a rimfire 50y event.
