Matty Bulger is launching the country's – if not the world's – first magazine dedicated to gay weddings.

Although there are some titles overseas that cater to LBGTQI brides and grooms, Mr Bulger said Australia needed a dedicated gay-wedding title.

The first edition of Groom and Guy will be available in more than 1200 newsagents and stores on Thursday and features eight real wedding stories, and sections on fashion, honeymoons, tailoring and entertaining.

Unashamedly aimed at high-end grooms, the magazine targets couples who are earning "$100,000 plus". He said many gay couples were prepared to spend up big for their weddings.

By comparison, heterosexual couples spend about $50,000 on their wedding day, based on an average of figures from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and Bride to Be magazine.

Mr Bulger believed gay wedding planning was a more egalitarian process than heterosexual weddings, where the bride tends to make most of the arrangements.

"With a gay couple generally it's very heavily dictated by both of them and that's a challenge in itself – how do they get what they both want and be happy with the day," he said.

The magazine's team, which includes Bulger's partner, Tony Smith, and administration manager Rachel Matters, have also attracted some high-profile contributors, in former Real Housewives of Melbourne star Chyka Keebaugh and The Block alumnus Dea Jolly.

The cover of the 210-page launch edition features Chris and Richard who married in South Africa, where gay marriage has been legal since 2006.

Mr Bulger said it was important the magazine establish itself before gay marriage is legalised in Australia.

"We asked ourselves, 'Should we wait until it becomes legal or should we do it now and be around for when it happens. People are already doing it, they are already committing it. Let's jump in and grab the biggest market share now."

However, some members of the gay community have expressed concerns to Mr Bulger that launching a magazine before gay marriage is legalised may provoke the government and opponents.

"It is a good testament to show the government and everyone else that this is happening, this is a good thing, it should be celebrated and allowed," he said.

So do Mr Bulger and Mr Smith plan to walk down the aisle themselves?

"When we started [the magazine] there were no plans for me to get married ... I think there are lots of ways to show dedication and love to your partner. But after looking at photos, etcetera, I would like to have an extravagant celebration," Mr Bulger said.

This week, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he expected a plebiscite on the issue would be held this year, if he wins government on July 2. Labor has said it would not hold the $160-million plebiscite and would instead hold a parliamentary vote on changes to marriage laws within 100 days of winning government.

Various estimates have put the value of gay marriage to the economy anywhere from $1.2 billion to $2 billion.

Groom and Guy will be published again in November, then quarterly.

Mr Bulger has started the process of having Groom and Guy recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's first gay-wedding magazine.

Australian Marriage Equality spokeswoman Shirleene Robinson said the publication was a positive step for "members of the LGBTI community to see how they might be able to celebrate their joy and happiness with the ability to share this important life moment with their family and friends".
