Bobridge's attempt at the Darebin International Sports Centre in Melbourne will be held on the last night of the Australian track championships.

It will also be held the night before Australian 2011 Tour de France champion Cadel Evans (BMC) lines up for his retirement race – the one-day Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race at Geelong.

Bobridge's bid to better the record of 51.852 kilometres held by Austria's Matthias Brandle will also be made one week before fellow South Australian Rohan Dennis attempts the record.

Dennis (BMC) announced his record attempt overnight Wednesday from Europe. His record bid will be at the Velodrome Suisse in Grenchen, Switzerland on February 8.

Bobridge, who in 2011 took over from Englishman Chris Boardman as the 4000m individual pursuit world record holder, not only hopes to better the hour record Brandle recently set but to take a "good chunk" off it on the indoor DISC track.

"At this stage I can see myself beating the current hour record, but it's how much further I can go that will be decided on the day," Bobridge said on Thursday in Melbourne.

Should he succeed, Bobridge will enter cycling history alongside some of the all-time greats such as former record holders Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain and Boardman. Bobridge, who from January 1 will ride for the Australian Budget Forklifts National Road Series team after his contract with the Dutch World Tour Belkin team expires, has welcomed confirmation of Dennis' attempt.

Asked if Dennis' announcement had affected him, Bobridge said: "Not at all. I had heard a whisper that he was going to do it. It doesn't change what I will or can do."

Bobridge believes the recent interest in the hour record has been great for track cycling. There is also speculation two Britons plan bids – 2012 Tour winner Bradley Wiggins (Sky) and former British time trial champion Alex Dowsett (Movistar).

"I think it's great that everyone is starting to put their hand up for it. It makes it more interesting," Bobridge said. "I'm aiming to set a benchmark that leaves everyone questioning themselves about whether they want to do it or not."

Bobridge's record preparation will allow him to race on the road in the coming Australian summer of cycling. He plans to compete in the national road titles at Ballarat, Victoria in the time trial on January 8, and also hopes to line up in the January 17-25 Tour Down Under if selected for the Uni SA-Australia national team. His Budget Forklifts team does not qualify for the Tour Down Under.

"It's been years of preparation with pursuits and team pursuits. I think it's going to come together with all that previous trackwork," Bobridge said.

Cycling Australia men's track endurance coach Tim Decker believes the record is there for Bobridge to beat.

"Jack should be able to well surpass the current record," Decker said. "Jack is going to tackle this in Jack Bobridge fashion. He's unlimited. He's just going to go for it. I think it will be really exciting and you'll definitely see him in a lot of pain, particularly in the last 10 minutes."
