ORIENTEERING
WAGGAROOS Debbie and Alex Davey competed exceptionally well at the recent Australian Orienteering Championships in Perth.
In the W55 Debbie finished with third placings class in long distance and middle distance courses and a fourth placing in the sprint distance.
In the M55 class Alex was consistently in the top eight.
The long and middle distance races were conducted east of Perth near Northam.
The sprint race was conducted around Curtin University.
Closer to home, Wes Campbell had a convincing win in the WaggaRoos event at the Murraguldrie State Forest last Sunday.
The wildflowers were in splendid bloom and although the open forest and gentle hills invited fast running, the warm weather and tricky navigation resulted in slower times than most participants expected.
Wes Campbell had some difficulties at the third and fifth controls but was still able to win the 3.8km hard course by a resounding 40 minutes.
Dale Clegg had significant difficulties locating the third control but managed the remainder of the course satisfactorily despite being restricted by hayfever to just edge out Albury couple Bill Krautz and Vera McCluskey for second place.
On the 5.2km hard course, Albury’s Rob Simmons was one who did take advantage of the open terrain and ran an almost error free race to win comfortably.
David Jenkins from the Bushflyers club in Canberra was also steady and finished second which was a good effort considering he has missed most of the last four months through injury.
Albury’s Matt Flower missed the first control but then settled down to finish third.
The next local event will be at Pomingalarna Reserve on Sunday October 26 starting from the Bagley Street entrance next to the golf club.
This will be a chance for local orienteers to tackle the courses used recently in the Riverina Championships.
Newcomers are welcome.

We had a successful morning there and pulled up stumps at 12.30pm.

Our two juniors Tyler Chapman and Andrew Wright managed 36 and 27.
