As this week is National Healthy Bones Week, Murrumbidgee Medicare Local (MML) is reminding Wagga residents to take care of their bones with a few simple tips.
“Being active regularly can help reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis and can also assist in managing osteoporosis,” MML fracture liaison nurse Verina Walsh advises.
“Healthy eating and including plenty of calcium in your diet, by having dairy along with ensuring your Vitamin D levels are adequate are also important."
MML exercise physiologist Sarah Duke is also highlighting the importance of participating in regular exercise.
“Participating in physical activity can reduce the rate of bone loss and it also aids in preventing falls as exercise helps us to improve balance and build muscle strength,” she said.
The Murrumbidgee Osteoporosis Refracture Prevention Service operates within Wagga and works to improve the health of the community at high risk of osteoporosis by improving early diagnosis and providing optimal clinical management, particularly for those who have sustained a fracture as a result of a slip, trip or fall.
The service aims to reduce people’s risk of further fracture and hospitalisation.
For more information about the service, contact Verina Walsh on 6923 3111.
